Tim kicks off the week up two places as Monfils and Kiefer dive down the rankings with last year's points coming off.


The table now goes up 5 places higher, as Tim's ranking gets closer to Andy's


Others dropping are:  Hrbaty, Verdasco, Grosjean, Santoro, Ramirez- Hidalgo, Lee, Srichaphan and Serra.

This week seems to be one of the very few in the tennis year where nearly everyone is playing. This is not good news for two reasons. Firstly it means Tim must go deep in the tournament and those above him must lose first round for him to gain significant places. Secondly, and possibly more dangerously it means there are a whole bunch of people just waiting to overtake.


With an 18th score of 40 points Tim must reach the quarters before he makes any move at all. If he does that he would immediately gain one place and potentialy two more if Saifn and Grosjean lose second and first round respectively.


A semi would see Tim on 945 points, another one place gained and two more up for grabs if Volandri and Chela both go out before the quarters.


A final appearance gains Tim another place with a further three available should Hrbaty, Calleri and Acasuso lose before the semis, quarters and quarters in that order.


Winning the tournament would not guarentee Tim any more places but he could overtake Gasquet, Youzhny and Soderling if they lost before the second round, quarters and semis.


So, absolute best case ending the week ranked 23, a rise of 15.

The view backwards is less positive. Presuming Tim loses in the first round (or second, ie before adding to his points total) the following can overtake.


Melzer(quarters), Wawrinka(qf), Malisse(semis), Almagro(qf), Benneteau(qf), Massu(sf), Simon(sf), Fish(final), Santoro(f), Clement(f), Ramirez Hidalfo(win), Mathieu(w), Mayer(w), Ginepri(w), Srichaphan(w), Kohlschreiber(w), Becker(w), and Mirnyi(w).


So just a few pins needed. All three in St P. can overtake, A maximum of four can overtake in Lyon. A maximum of three can overtake in Basel. Meaning Tim can lose a maximum of 10 places overall if he loses before gaining any points. That would leave him at 46 in the rankings.

The table's updated. Mathieu joins Melzer  on the flight home.


Grosjean ahead of Tim and Almagro (too close) behind him advance.


 todays play sees: Fish, Srichaphan, Kohlschreiber and Becker behind Tim in Basel, Safin & Hrbaty ahead of Tim in Lyon, Malisse, Benneteau, Clement and Serra behind him in Lyon.


The biggest threats are Malisse & Benneteau (who play Spadea and Wildcard Mathieu). The closest target is Safin (who plays Gasquet)

Yesterday was quite a good day for Tim!


The table's updated.


Safin goes out ahead, so Tim will now overtake if he reches the quarters.
Santoro, Serra and Becker from the chasing pack go out. Edit: and not Clement!
Only Fish and Kohlschreiber advance.


Tim is, of course, playing today. So are: Soderling, Hrbaty, Acasuso, Calleri, Volandri & Chela ahead of him. Volandri & Chela play each other so one will go out for sure. Of the threats, Almagro, Wawrinka, Massu, Simon, Ram- Ham, Mayer, Ginepri and Mirnyi  are playing. Almagro & Mayer and Simon & Ginepri play each other.


Almagro can overtake today, so is number 1 target for your pins!


Over to Bethan to tell us what all this means for Tim's chances!

What all those first round results mean is that:


Mirnyi is the only threat left in St Petersburg so Tim can only lose one place from there.


None of the threats in Lyon have gone out yet so four can still overtake from there.


And three can still overtake from Basel. So, new worst case is a drop of 8 places to 44 in the rankings.


 


Above Tim, things are going pretty much to plan. Grosjean won his first round so only two places will be gained if Tim reaches the quarters, but he can be caught at a later stage (presuming Tim gets that far). The only real loss is that Gasquet won his first round so is no longer catchable this week, meaning best case for Tim (winning the tournament) is 24.
