Thanks for that article on Pauffley, I read it some time ago but had forgotten about it, how do you remember these things Arka !
Cox could be in with a shout of winning the US Open in 2008, I think that 2007 may be a little early [of course I'd love to be proved wrong] though I'm confident that he'll be well inside the top 50 by then and will have a good chance of maybe making the quarters. Outdoor hard does seem to be his best surface, along with grass. It'll be interesting to see how he does on clay in 2007 given that by the time the clay-court season starts, he'll have been based in Spain for a year.
Who are the best 16 year olds in the world, how does Dan compare to them junior and senior-wise ? Dan's best chance of winning a slam, may be the Aussie Open, so many of the top juniors simply don't bother to make the journey over there each year, which is how Donald Young ended up winning it and hasn't been near the latter stages of a slam since. Of course, the LTA may not want him to play the Aussie Open, they may prefer him to "get his feet dirty in the British futures" as they like say, and that's been the case with several top juniors in the past.
For some reason the Queens junior event isn't covered by the live scores, I don't even think that the final is, yet it's on a court which is covered during main draw qualifying. The LTA always make a big fuss with a full report of the final and getty images take quite a few pics but the official website completely ignores it every year !!! Makes you wonder why elite juniors bother to play it, but they do. I find it such a mystery that at Queens, someone like Iain Atkinson can suddenly discover a rich vein of form and thrash two top 10 juniors in straights then not has anything like the same results for the rest of the year.
Dan could be in the top 50 as early as this January if he does well at Eddie Herr and Orange Bowl.
The Queens final was covered on livescores, I am pretty sure of that. I was really surprised by Atkinson's performance. I hope that there is a lot of hidden talent in him.
It will be bad if they don't allow Dan to play AO Juniors.
By they way, does anyone know about the funding our Juniors receive? I mean, to what extent do top quality players like Andy Murray receive monetary help? People like Cilic had full funding - free training, free coaching and free travel.
I'll post on Dan's competitors in Dan's own thread when I return.
I don't think it was, I remember in previous years, I waited in vain to see if the junior final was covered when Boggo won it in 2002. The BBC never give it a mention aswell, weird given that we've won it since 2002.
The LTA have prevented juniors from playing AO in the past, not sure if they had as much promise as Dan though. They let Boggo play.
Apart from funding for Brad Gilbert, Andy doesn't get anything now. He received some funding from the LTA when he was younger to help fund the costs of Sanchez-Casal. As he was Scottish he also benefitted from Tennis Scotland and Sport Scotland funding. However, there was still a substantial amount Judy had to raise for that and the costs of tournaments. I dunno how much Naomi Cavaday gets, Jade Curtis gets quite a lot plus his sponsorship deal with Ariel. I imagine Cox gets some to fund his costs of living in Spain.
None of our juniors have had free training, coaching and travel, that's for sure !!!!
