That's just absolutely shocking. To blow 4 set points is just dreadful. Basically Alex choked away this match. Given the chances he's had he should have won in straights
When he was a break up in the 1st set and looking like beating Slutier for the 2nd time in a row, I could see him back in the DC team to play the Netherlands. He can't possibly play now, having chucked two winning sets away like that against one of their players.

Desperately disappointing, exactly the sort of loss Alex had stopped doing by and large, had it within his gift to within both those sets, served for the 1st and 4 set points in the 2nd and blew them both, hope he can pick himself up for next week.
a disapointing loss, but i wouldnt get too down hearted, we heard how strange these courts were and have seen how the matches can go, alex will know he could have taken the match, ok he didnt, but he is obviuosly playing well. Missing the 4 sps to take it into a 3rd hurts but i dont think we can say this was the same old boggo syndrome, that would have been him losing 76 62 or something.
he played vs a top player and matched him, if he keeps that up it will come good for him. whats crucial is that he goes into nottingham at the same lvl, playing hard and fighting, unless we get some feed back we have no way of telling what happened in that tb, did alex go for his shots was he unlukcy etc. he has been putting on a good run reacnly, just look at the last 3 player he has lost to: henman, tiprsavic and sluiter, thats not bad at all, and all fairly close matches.

sluiter clearly just beat him at his own game, allowing boggo to take the lead and sneaking back on him. At least he's defended his points this week. Still a favourite for next week I'd hope and the top 100 still beckons.
I spoke to Mike yesterday about the matches against Vico and Sluiter in Kolding, his email had stopped working in Denmark.
On the Sluiter match, Mike said that the better player lost - Alex played his best match of the week. The turning point in the 1st set was when he missed three successive 2nd serve returns on the Sluiter service points from 3-2 in the tiebreak. In the 2nd set breaker, the points went so quickly from 6-2 up, Mike said he wasn't even quite sure what happened in them. He said that Alex was guilty of thinking he was already into a 3rd set and losing his focus which is easy to do with a lead like that.
It's good to hear that Alex was the better player in the match, given that Sluiter's top 100. I think that having played him a couple of weeks ago, Alex has started to work him out. It's easy to see how you can lose concentration when you've got that kind of lead in a tiebreak !
Mike was also keen to stress how much Mackin's improved lately. He said that if a couple of points had gone his way, it could have been him in the Kolding semis instead of Waske !

Its great to have these insights, thanks for posting. I am a little suprised that Al has decided to play the indoor hard in Ukraine rather than on the carpet in Germany. Iknow the Ukraine is a much bigger tournament, but with Al's favourite surface being carpet, I'd have thought he'd have gone for that. He still has loads of points to defend, but plenty of opportunity to do so. Lets see what happens this week, Al usually does well at home
i am not sure if al likes carpet or hard best? i think its better for him to be playing the bigger boys tho, thats what he wants after all, and at the monmet he belives he can beat them.
