Wow, what a win for Natasha Khan “I played really well,” the Sussex teenager said. “My serve and forehand were the key, the speed of the courts suit my game and I'm looking forward to and feeling confident going into my next match.”
Great chance now for Natasha to make the quarters and push on towards the top 500. She plays German qualifier Angelika Roesch in rd2. Roesch beat a girl ranked 324 1 and 2 in rd1. They've played once before, in rd1 of qualifying for a 25K indoors in Jersey at the start of 2006. Roesch won 6-2, 7-5.
Great win for Naomi Cavaday, her approximate playing strength at the moment is around 200 I'd say, absolutely thrashed the 3rd seed [ranked 350] in the qualies. It's a shame she's been drawn to play Kerber so early, I'd have given her a good chance against most other rd2 opponents here. Kerber is also a leftie and raced in the Jersey title without dropping a set and beating Mel South and Georgie Stoop along the way. Her year has been disrupted by injury though she's still managed to reach another 25K final and two semis. She was beaten by Katie O'Brien in Madrid a few weeks back.
Grrrr @ Keothavong having to play Stoop in rd1. Speaking afterwards “It wasn’t the greatest of matches to be honest, but a win’s a win,” the third seed said. “The courts are lightning fast here – they’re hard courts but they’re as fast as carpet courts, so it’s important to serve well. I got away with not serving or playing great today, but if I want to win tomorrow I need to serve and play a bit better. If you can serve well then it gives you a head start.” Anne's now got a rematch against Pavlovic, who made the Jersey final last week and beat Anne in 3 sets in the quarters.
It's a shame Anna couldn't reproduce her great win over Serra-Zanetti in France a few weeks ago Katie plays the Italian next. Speaking after rd1 “I was quite pleased with the way I played today,” O’Brien said. “The courts are much faster here than last week in Jersey so it was a bit tricky to adapt.”
Maybe. The court suits her big hitting game, she'll need to serve at a very high level throughout the match, if she does that she'll be hard to beat as the court is so fast
In the women's $25,000 event, British No.1 Anne Keothavong continued her winning run moving into the last four with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Germany's Andrea Petkovic
The 23-year-old world No.135 and third seed faces another German in Angelique Kerber for a place in the final.
In the top half of the draw Katie O’Brien was defeated by top seed and world No.104 Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium 6-0, 7-5. Flipkens semi-final opponent is Hungary's Zsofia Gubascsi.
