Michel Koning (Ned) bt Joshua Goodall (Gbr) 6-4 6-7 (8-6) 6-3
It was Josh Goodall's 21st Birthday yesterday , so I think we can let him off this defeat, he might have had a few too many celebratory shandys the night before.
Drew, did you get the chance to go yesterday or are you going today to cheer on Bloomers and the ladies ?
I hear that the courts in Glasgow are super-fast, they're some of the quickest indoor courts on the circuit. That could be why Josh struggled and also why the top seed Cipolla went out. Koning is proving a bit of a bogeyman for Josh in the indoor tournaments, that's the 2nd time he's beaten him in a close 3 setter this year.
The courts will be very much to Richard's liking though, with his serve. He plays Stefano Ianni today. Ianni reached the Jersey semis last week and knocked out Russian seed Andrei Golubev [wr: 382] yesterday. Ianni has a 3-0 record v Brits in the last couple of weeks Hopefully Richard gives him a masterclass in the art of indoor tennis
Richard Bloomfield def. Stefano Ianni (ITA) 7-6(6) 6-2
So in the semis it's Richard vs Dawid Olejniczak (POL)
Great win for Bloomers. He remains in great from by the looks and hopefully if he plays to his potential, given the spped of the surface in Glasgow, has enough to beat the 3 others left in this tournament.
The question as always, is whether he will be able to play to that potential and achieve what he is capable of in this event.
The path is now clear for Richard to take the title with the top 2 seeds going out, and both were clay courters so they were always going to struggle with the speed of the surface. The key as always is that Richard's able to mantain his rhythm on serve, if he does that I can't see anyone stopping him. It is slightly worrying that Olejniczak has knocked out the no 1 and no 5 seeds so far but if Richard plays at his level he showed in Rennes last week he should have too much class for the Pole.
It's disappointing that Josh's conqueror went out in the next round, incidentally Klier had beaten Koning last week in two tiebreaks. Koning must have been really cheesed off at losing a 3rd successive really close breaker to the guy !!
Where will this take Goodall and Hutchins to in the doubles rankings ? Close to the top 150 ??
When Richard's Southampton points come off, he'll drop down to about 226 but this run will take him up to approx 216. If he wins the title he'll move up to 210 approx.
