The choice of Kalaitzis for a wildcard was slightly bizarre, I thought that Brewer would have got one especially for the 2nd biggest tournament in Scotland. However, Kalaitzis definately justified his wildcard today. He did well to push Ianni so close.
David Brewer's been in fine form in recent weeks, he's got a great chance to reach the quarters as he'll play Conor Niland in rd2, who he beat in 3 sets a few weeks ago in Nottingham.
Great to see Ross Hutchins back in form and beating a player ranked several hundred places higher [Torresi - wr: 455] in straights. He's now got Jim May's conqueror - 5th seed Sjisling which will be very tough.
Like Hutchins, Bamford took full advantage of facing a clay-court specialist. I can't see him beating Bloomers though in rd2.
Rushby will now play 2nd seed Vagnazzi [wr: 210] in rd2. Vagnozzi beat Navarro Pastor last week, Tom will do well to make it competitive.
Good to see Bloomers continuing his form but that was a really harsh draw for Flanagan
Josh should win, he's playing an unranked French qualifier.
Some info on Slabba's opponent Dawid Olejniczak:
Olejniczak reached a career high of 305 but from February to May he lost 8 successive matches. However, in June he returned to form on clay, reaching a 10K final and two quarters. The best result of his year came at the beginning of September when he reached the quarters of a challenger on clay. However, unlike many players who are successful on clay, Olejniczak is also effective indoors, last week he reached the semis of a futures in France before losing to the eventual winner.
I'm gutted that Slabba lost in rd1 Just hasn't been able to come through the tight matches he's had recently, that's kind of been the story of his year, there have been lots of tournaments where he's had the opportunity to go deep into the draw but has lost a really close match, hasn't been able to up his level at the key moments.
Just noticed the first result in Niall's above post: Again, shows that Alex did get a really rough draw, his opponent's knocked out the no 1 seed [Cipolla has been in the top 150 this year aswell !]
The wins for Sjisling and Vagnozzi aren't particularly unexpected, Vagnozzi's close to the top 200 and Sjisling is nearly in the top 300, they're both ranked several hundred places higher than Ross and Tom.
Good to see Richard continuing his run, with Cipolla out, he's now got a great chance of reaching the final.
I'm hopeful that David Brewer will secure a win over Conor Niland having beaten Niland last month in 3 sets outdoors and also given that it's on Scottish soil.
Josh is in action against Dutch qualifier Michal Koning at the moment. Koning's ranked 768 but he was ranked 368 earlier this year before injury. They played earlier this year in rd2 of the Wrexham challenger and Koning won 4-6, 7-6[4], 6-4
