GB F16 - Glasgow - 15K

Qualies draw is out:
http://www.tenniseurope.org/PDF/Professional/mens/2006/Oct-Dec06/Glasgow/sq.pdf

The top 3 seeds are Ross Hutchins, Neil Bamford and Tom Rushby. Hutchins can hopefully regain some form here.

All 3 should qualify, Bamford could have a tough match in rd2 as he's likely to play Iain Atkinson. Rushby is likely to play Tom Burn in the final qualies round which would be a very interesting match between two highly talented big-hitting baseliners who both have a reputation for getting too down on themselves during matches and ending up beating themselves.

Aswell as Iain Atkinson; David Rice and Lewis Barnes are also entered. Rice plays a Swede with 1 ranking pt in rd1, but if he gets through to rd2 he'll play Martin Slanar [wr: 764]. David Brewer is the other seed in that section, given that he'll be playing in Scotland and that Slanar hasn't played indoors for around 2 years, I reckon Brewer will qualify.

Jim May and Richard Irwin are the 7th and 8th seeds and are likely to qualify.

Are any of our many Scottish members likely to go to this tournament sometime this week ?

Slabba has a wc. I'm presuming that 2 or maybe all 3 of Lee, Auckland and Delgado have got wcs or maybe Dyce and Cox have got wcs.

Great win for unranked Simon Ferguson defeated Puntus who's in the top 1000

Rushby and Burn have played twice before. Burn won 6-3, 6-2 indoors in 2004 and Rushby won 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 indoors last autumn.

I think that Bamford, Rushby, Brewer, May and Irwin will win, I'm not sure how to call the Hutchins - Blocker match given Ross' recent form and that Blocker knocked out 9th seed and world no 925 Motti in straight sets in rd2.

Main draw will be available this evening

Two of the wildcards are now known: Slabinsky and Graeme Dyce.

Lets hope Slabba gets a better draw this week.

Is hard courts his favourite surface?

Given that Glasgow/LTA have given Nataha Khan a wildcard for doing well last week might Ian Flanagan get one here. He was on the ALTS list but didn't play qaulifying so maybe he knew something we didn't.

Yeah, Slabba has had dreadful draws in the past 3 futures. He was drawn against Junaid in rd2 of GB F13 and Junaid went on to beat Martin Lee on the way to reaching the final. Then Baker in rd1 of GB F14 and the 4th seed [who went on to make the semis] in rd1 last week. Slabba was unlucky in that match, it could have quite easily gone the other way, came down to a couple of pts in the end. He was 5-1 down in set 1 but pulled it back to 5-4 and then had several chances to make it 5-5 but missed them. 2nd set went with serve until 5-5 when Alex missed some easy shots to get broken.

Hard courts and clay are his favourite surfaces. His best results have come indoors though he can be vulnerable against really big servers indoors.

Can Flanagan get a SE this week or are there none for futures ?

If not, it would be really harsh not to give him a wildcard, they don't usually decide until the Saturday before the tournament so the organisers would have seen the great results he had.

Maybe if Flanagan's got the 3rd wildcard, Martin Lee's got the final one and Auckland and Delgado are taking a week off, possibly going for one of the ATPs next week ?

Thinking about it...are there any evening matches ?

Where is it being held ? May try and pop in if I can arrange a 'site visit' to Glasgow.

Given that there's a women's 25K being held at the same time as the men's 15K, play will probably go on until about 7pm on Tuesday and Wednesday. It'll be great if you can go Drew, a chance to see Graeme Dyce in action on home soil.

This is the tournament address: Scotstoun Leisure Centre, Scotstoun Playing Fields, Danes Drives, Glasgow.

Incidentally, the Scotstoun Leisure centre is also where the Tri-Nations tournament is held in December between Scotland, Ireland and Wales. It's held over a weekend, I'll try and find out the dates if anyone is interested. Jamie Baker competed for Scotland last year.

My previous avatar was taken at Scotstoun Leisure Centre, and that's where I virtually always played when I was younger.
