ATP Stockholm: Marray vs Gicquel

After doing so well to qualify, Jonny M has been rewarded with a v tough, but winnable first round match vs Marc Gicquel.


Gicquel reached the semis at Metz hast week, and US open 4th round, only losing to the Fed, however Marray will fancy his chances having already got 3 competitive matches under his belt at this venue!

On a positive note, Marray leads the H2H 1-0 beating Gicquel in Kyoto Japan last year in 2 close sets 7-6 7-5. That was on carpet.


However, this will be a very very tough match for Marray and I will be very surprised if he were to come through. Fingers crossed though and let's all get behind him.

Jonny is 3rd on court, so I'd guess he'd be on at about 3:30pm?

Yeah, I'd say it'll start sometime between 3 and 3.30 pm. Play begins at midday on court 1.

Jonny has done exceptionally well to qualify here and not drop a set so far. Unfortunately Gicquel is in the form of his life, ranked 60 in the world. Last week he beat the likes of David Ferrer and Florent Serra on the way to the Metz semis and he beat Ferrero and Gaudio on the way to the US Open 4th round before losing to Federer.

Here's a snippet about Gicquel from the US Open site, part of a preview to his match with Federer:

MARC GICQUEL has flair, and winds up pretty well on his groundies. You have to give him credit for powering past Juan Carlos Ferrero and an angry Gaston Gaudio. But neither of those men can hurt you with their serve, or take over the net when necessary like Federer can. Roger dictates play and executes when he has to and will waste Gicquel in straight sets.

Lopez beat Monaco 2-1 Ret so the doubles match prior to Marrys match is just about to start.

Marray v Gicquel may start earlier than we thought 2.30pm approx
