Alex mentioned after his match against Henman that something he needs to work on is keeping up a high percentage of first serves throughout a 3 set match, he says that often during 3rd sets his 1st serve percentage dips and against top players that's costly.
Did Alex come to the net much ? During the henman match the commentators mentioned that something he could improve on is mixing his baseline play up a bit, and when he attacks a short or mid-court ball, following the shot into the net more to try and finish off the point instead of getting too comfortable at the baseline. They mentioned that one very effective pattern of play for Alex is when he hits the sliced serve out wide to the ad court and serve-volleys, they feel he doesn't do it enough as he wins so many points when he does.
I did not see Alex's match with Henman, so was not particularly looking for the patterns of play you mention. I don't recall Alex coming to the net very much - he may have been put off by a bad volley early on (probably in the game which cost him the first set - I can't remember for sure). The stats for the third set were not aired - I imagine because the scheduled broadcast time had slightly overrun.
