Del Potro reached the 3rd round with a resounding 6-2, 6-2 victory over Robby Ginepri, last week he beat former world no 1, Moya in straights 6-3, 6-2 but couldn't follow it up in rd 2 against Delgado of Paraguay by retiring in the 2nd set but down from the 1st.
His notable achievements this year are winning challengers in Aguascalientes, Mexico which was a claycourt one and Segovia, Spain which was a hardcourt event. Also reached his 1st QF in ATP tour event at Umag. Also qualified for Roland Garros and the US Open. His most notable wins so far this year are beating Moya in straights in Mumbai, Chela in 3 at Stuttgart in a claycourt event and beat Verdasco on his way to the challanger title in Segovia and took a set off Ferreo at Roland Garros.
Was in the US Open Qualies last year at the tender age of 16. In 2005 he made a metoric rise in the rankings starting at 1045 and finished the year just outside the top 150 at 157 and consistently moving slowly towards to the top 100 with a few blips this year. This guy I also tip to be a top 20 player at the very least by 2008 and is potential top 10.
Shortest sum-up on him was a "Nalbandian with service" and does tend to make a few UE but less than he did last year ofc. Players he admires are Safin and Hewitt and from wha I've seen he plays quite similar to them.
That's it for my summary of Tim's next opponent in Tokyo
P.s. Tim should win in straights or 3 close sets

His rd1 win certainly was impressive as Ginepri's a pretty big hitter. I think he would have gone a lot further in Mumbai last week, he destroyed Moya but then ate some dodgy curry [well I'm presuming that's what casued his stomach upset ] and that severely hindered him throughout his match against Delgado and he wasn't able to find his best form.
As you say, he's at his best on clay but he's also very effective on hard courts. He's 6ft 5 and has a pretty big first serve, from what I've seen it could get bigger as he doesn't quite take advantage of his height with the serve.
I agree, he's a definate top 20 player of the future, he's breezed through the futures and challengers with no problems, very much like Andy.
I think Tim will have too much nous for Del Potro particularly as the hard courts are playing quite quickly. There are very few players like Tim in the modern game now and Del Potro won't have come up against many players with his style before which will be a big advantage for Tim. I think Tim will win in straights.
i watched his match against Moya and he absolutely slaughtered him. He has very big penetrative groundstrokes and a very good looking backhand from what i can see. For someone so tall im surprised his serve isnt so potent - its not bad but i can see it being a weapon in the future. I think it'll be tough but hopefully tim's renewed form and confidence couple with his experience will see him through this. I think it'll be two tight sets.
Do we know when this match will be played. I must admit to knowing nothing about Del Potro, but from what I read this will be a challange to Tim. Hopefully he will come through it in flying colors.
OOP shows henman's third on court 1, play starts at 10am japan time, so should be on around 4am GMT or no later than 3am. (OOP also shows murrays doubles match on last at the same court)
See you guys between 4.30 and 5 am for the match. I'm off to Bedfordshire right now
Well UBF I hope you sleep through your alarm as I understand it is raining down there. I am ready to fill you in on what is taking place....but I think we are looking at a rain delay.
Looks like play is on some outside courts but not others.
Doubles match at bottom of scoreboard is racing along!
Centre court is a serving battle os going quite quickly. There's some speculation that matches will be moving court so Tim could appear any time by the looks of things!
Seems like in the middle of her suspended singles match Paola Suarez played a full doubles match on another court, and is yet to return to singles action.
