Murray v Novak: Tokyo Rd1

This match will be on Wednesday

Novak reached rd2 with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Robin Vik

He's now a veteran at 31 and is currently ranked 130 but that's due to injury, his career high ranking was no 5, back in October 2002. Arguably the finest achievement of Novak's career came that year when he reached the Aussie Open semis, losing in 5 sets to eventual winner Thomas Johansson.

He made his comeback from injury in May this year, and reached the semis of an ATP on clay in Austria. He reached the 4th round of the US Open before losing to Nadal in straights but he gave the Spaniard quite a few problems in the 2nd and 3rd sets of that match. He's played once indoors this year, beating Raemon Sluiter in 4 sets in the Holland v Czech Republic Davis Cup tie.

In his career, Novak has won 7 ATP titles and has reached the final of a further 6. He's won 18 doubles titles and has reached the final of the US Open and Wimbledon in doubles.

Novak holds a 3-2 winning record over Henman and a 2-2 record against Rusedski. He's never played Murray.

Novak's game is based around a massive 1st serve [he's 6ft 3] and bludgeoning his opponent from the baseline off both flanks. It'll be a tough opener for Andy.

Good news for Andy: The tournament is being played outdoors and according to Jamie the conditions are very heavy as it's been raining a lot. Won't suit Tim's game very well but will be perfect for Andy.

Murray is second on court 1 after a womens match so possibly 3am start British time.

BTW anyone else annoyed that the live score thing doesnt say whether it's a second serve or not takes some of the optimisim/pesimism out of it.

Go Andy and Go Murray Bros.

OK, so who's going to be up tonight.

I am, will Vonce be around ? What about Doug ? Can we persuade Sally, Madeline and Bethan to lose some of their beauty sleep just for tonight ? What time will it be in Ohio, Andymonium ?

From Brad Gilbert's blog:

10.2.2006 -

We're in week #3 of our 7 week tour...Unfortunately, Bangkok didn't go so well last week. Andy lost to his countryman Tim Henman for the first time, but on a good note...got to the finals of doubles for the first time with older brother Jamie Murray. Lost in a super tie-breaker with Urlich and Ram. We are now in Tokyo, haven't been here since 1999...this is an event that I played in the early 80's and guess what, nothing has changed. It's like deja vu, the courts look exactly the same. We're looking forward to a good week, starting off with Jiri Novak. The tournament for the first time, has Roger Federer here and he's taken Japan by storm. Andy's going to bang the gong tonight, a tournament tradition for the top four seeds.

The live scoring isn't as good as last week, it's a bit slower and doesn't always give all the points. I prefer those ATP scoreboards, nice and easy to navigate.

The one thing I'd like to see change with the ATP scoreboards is for them to list the winners and unforced errors like they do with the grand slam scoreboards. Those stats tell you so much more about a match than just serve percentages.

Sadly the late nights will be getting cut short. As I got into a row with my mother over it and got into a big arguement but ofc it just wasn't about this. I just have a few issues happening in the moment in my life. Things to do and the like, but I will still be around. But not as late as I'm usually on.

As I voted I'm going for Andy in 3 as Novak is very experienced and should give Andy a bit of a challenge. But Andy should really pull through this, plus who voted for Novak in 3?

It's currently 04:25, and all the opening matches except one are finished... yes, you guessed it, the ladies match on court 1 is still ongoing.

The first set was very tight, with Medina Garrigues winning it in a tie-breaker.  The second set hasn't even finished yet, but MG did break serve at 4-4, only to get broken straight back when serving for the match!  Thankfully, MG has just broken back again, and is about to serve for it at 6-5... I really hope this doesn't go to a 3rd set!

Finally!  I thought MG had lost her nerve after going from 30-0 up, to 30-30, and even having to save break points against her in that game, but it's over now, 7-6 7-5.  I don't even know if I'll be able to stay up for the entire Andy match...
