Excerpt:

Friday
A bad start to the day for John Lloyd – woken at 5.30am by a pack of stray dogs howling outside his balcony. He denied he was singing in the shower.

Great start for the team though – Greg came back from 0-3 15-40 in the fourth set to beat Sergiy Stakhovsky 9-7 in the fifth, saving a match point. Captain Lloyd was spotted popping pills at 7-7! And the scoreboards got stuck at 7-7 – they weren't geared for long sets! An awesome performance from Greg.

Andy followed him on court, which played a bit quicker in the afternoon. The sun was out and the clay became dustier and a little slippery. His opponent was a promising junior who had beaten Donald Young in the first round of the French Open junior event last year and who had qualified for a recent ATP Tour event in Bucharest. Straight sets win for Andy though and 2-0 to GB.

And how good is our bench looking? Gilbert, Lundgren, Maclagan, Lloyd plus the physios, doctor and stringer. World class!

Saturday
Let’s not dwell on the doubles. A late change to our line up with Delgy replacing Greg. Suffice to say that the Ukraine team looked more comfortable with each other and with the clay courts… 2-1 to GB.

The funniest bit in this match was when a conker fell off the chestnut tree above the baseline and hit Stakhovsky on the head just as he prepared for a serve. The home crowd were loving the match, too, especially the kids.

Torrential rain from about 5.30pm on Saturday – roads flooded. Bit of panic setting in about play being disrupted on Sunday. Ate out in the city centre at an amazing restaurant called The Piknik. Sat on the terrace under a large canopy and had to move the table when the rain started coming through the sides!

Sunday
The court was ready for practice at 8.30am and play started on time at 10.30. Groundsman had smothered it with bags and bags of extra clay making it even slower and also a bit uneven especially around the baselines. First up Andy.

Made a good start and took it 3-0 to seal the win. He was clearly delighted and quickly left for his next event in Bangkok via Budapest and Frankfurt – just the 18 hours travelling!

Debut time for Jamie Baker who had a great week training in Vienna with the squad before coming to Odessa. Best-of-three-set match against Sergei Bubka, the 19-year-old son of the pole vaulting legend, and who is clearly following in dad’s footsteps as a national celebrity.

Sun came out – very hot and the court sped up and got pretty dusty again. Jamie went down 6-3, 7-6, though he led 4-0 in the tie-break and felt he should have forced a deciding set.

Bubka's win went down well with the crowd and when he left the court, he was surrounded by young girls who were showering him with confetti!! Or maybe it was rose petals? Wouldn't happen in Glasgow!

So a great weekend – GB remain in Group 1 and await Thursday’s draw to find out their next opponents."
