Thanks
Transcript:-
TH: It was really tough, I was keen to back up my performance against Andy, and I had to come out and play good stuff, as Alex was playing well, competing hard, and at the beginning of the 3rd set it was anyone's match. I'm pleased I finished so strong.
BBC: It was a good win against Murray, who's now in the world's top 16, how much does it give you a lift, given your experience?
TH: It definitely gives me a lift, given the way he's played since Wimbledon, his ranking should be even better than that, it gives me confidence to beat someone of his ability. As you get further on in your career, sometimes it feels your wins get less enjoyable, and defeats get harder to take, so it's important to enjoy the moment and keep building on it. It's been a positive week and I want to keep the run moving.
BBC: Having said the defeats are harder to take, have you thought in the last couple of months, "why am I bothering to do this, I've taken great strides in the game, why do I still bother?" Has that thought entered your head at all?
TH: Not really, I still view myself as having a lot of challenges, and I want to keep working hard, as I still feel as if I can play good tennis and get my ranking a lot higher than it is now, and if I got to the stage where I wasn't enjoying it, and was struggling with motivation and commitment then I probably would stop. But that's certainly not the case at the moment, and I've got to keep working on a day-to-day, tournament-to-tournament basis. There's some good opportunities coming up towards the end of the year, and hopefully I can put myself in a better position to start well next year.
BBC: At this stage what at your goals and targets in your tennis?
TH: At this stage it's ranking orientated, dropping down to 60-65 isn't where I want to be, and it's been more of a consistency thing this year; I've playing some good tennis at times and beaten a lot of good players, but I've struggled to get consistency and string it together. It was an important win today but it certainly wasn't the best win of my career, but in the context of where I am, it was important to build on my first round win, and give me a good opportunity for the rest of the week.
BBC: Do you know who you'll play next?
TH: No, I think there's a chance I could play Srichaphan who's got plenty of support over here, playing in his own backyard, and I'm sure it'll be a match with a great atmosphere - I don't actually know who he plays but it'll be fun if he can come though, and we could maybe play tomorrow night or something.
P.S. This was originally going to be a brief summary, but in the end I've went for virtually a transcript, although, it’s not exactly word for word throughout. It’s close enough though.
P.P.S. Also, I started writing this about 2 hours ago, although, shortly before I was finished, I left my computer for a ‘short while’ which ended up lasting over an hour and a half!
Thanks for the transcript, good to hear that Tim has no thoughts of retirement at the moment, nice to hear him give a few words of encouragement to Alex aswell.
I thought Alex did really well in this match, by the start of the 3rd set it was really tight. Alex was playing more like a player ranked around 50 in the world not 148 ! He was really going for his shots apparently and hitting the lines which made it difficult for Tim. The key was the first few games in the 3rd, if Alex had maybe taken some of the chances he had in Tim's first couple of service games it could have been a different story.
Alex's thoughts after the match: "It was a pretty good match overall. I'm a little bit disappointed about the third set, but I can take a lot of positives out of here and move on. I did play pretty well. I just felt my first serve let me down and that was the key because as the match went on in the third set I didn't make too many first serves and he was on top of me."
