Sarah Borwell's rotator cuff in her shoulder is still causing her problems and that's why she had to withdraw. After playing a match serving underarm in Madrid she returned home and had some treatment in the north east. Physios told her to rest for five days but the injury hadn’t healed sufficiently in time for her first round match in Nottingham. “It still isn’t 100 per cent and I need to get it right for a possible trip to Mexico,” she said. “It’s very frustrating.”
Mel South seems to be suffering a bit of a dip in form, I was very surprised she lost so easily to Roma in rd1 who then got hammered by Karen Paterson.
F Haring [Fr][6][wr:261] bt K Paterson [GB] 6-4, 6-3
Very much an expected result though, Haring is proving a bit of a scourge of the British players at the moment having beaten Becky Llewellyn last week.
Naomi's had some truly fantastic results this week, the rd1 win beating a player ranked 283 [over 200 places higher !] 6-2, 6-1 was simply stunning !!! She would have beaten Webley-Smith in straights in rd2 but got nervous serving for the match and made some sloppy errors and lost the breaker and yesterday's win over Chvojkova [wr:331] was also extremely impressive given that the Czech had beaten the 8th seed in straights in rd2.
She faces a tough task against Amanda Keen today, Keen has yet to drop a set and she was apparently simply awesome yesterday completely overwhelming Sieveke who's ranked 15 places lower but had beaten the no 2 seed [Margit Ruutell ranked 184] in straight sets in rd2. Given that it's on outdoor courts, I rate Naomi as the favourite though Amanda's ability at the net and the pressure of her constant chip-charging may tell if it's a long match and goes to 3 sets.
Speaking after her quarter-final win, Naomi said: “I’m feeling really confident at the moment and I was really pleased with the result and the performance today. We had to wait about three or four hours to play because it was raining but I didn't mind because I’d had a really good hit in the morning and I was relaxed and looking forward to the match. I feel like I’m playing some really good aggressive tennis and I’m enjoying the challenge which is keeping me relaxed. I did get a little nervous serving for the match at 5-4 but I learnt from my match yesterday when I was leading comfortably in the second but lost my focus and lost it on a tie-break. So I took it one point at a time and came up with some good serves and finished off a couple of long rallies to take it. I am going to take my confidence into a tough semi-final against Amanda and I know I’ve got a good chance if I keep competing hard and enjoying it.”
Katie's now won 7 out of her last 8 matches !!! She'll have to overcome Karen Paterson's conqueror, 6th seed Florence Haring [wr:261] in the semis to make it two 25K finals in a row. I reckon Katie will win in straights. She's done really well since that US Open qualies loss from a set and a double break up which must have been really disheartening, she's won some really close matches in the last couple of weeks.
Given the strong field, the all Brit final is very good to see......
Two finals in a row for Katie is great to see. If Mel comes back to form (which I think means, away from injury), then the future could be really bright.
That's a shame about Naomi, I was really hoping she'd reach the final but still an excellent week for her. Congratulations to Amanda on coming through such a tight match.
Superb win for Katie
Katie and Amanda have never played before but my money's on Amanda because of her results in this tournament, reaching the final without dropping a set given the opponents she's played is highly impressive.
Ranking wise:
Katie 's currently ranked 245 [her points from Madrid will be added on this Monday] and she's guaranteed to move up to 192 whatever her result in the final If she wins she'll move up to 187. So she'll overtake Sarah Borwell to become the new British no 3
Amanda's currently ranked 337, she's guaranteed to move up to 282. If she wins she'll move up to 266.
Naomi is currently ranked 501 and she will move up to 418.
Karen Paterson will move up from 402 to 366 which will be a career high for her.
According to jamatthews, Naomi's about 75.5 points away from the Aussie open qualies cut.
It's theoretically possible as she could do that by winning three 25Ks. I think she'll end the year in the top 300, which requires 34 more points. That would be fantastic progress, considering that just over a year ago she was outside the top 1000.
Keen - Cavaday: Both players surprisingly struggled to hold serve during the first set and it was an edgy affair which went to the tiebreak in which Amanda's extra experience told in the end. Keen started to dominate in the 2nd set and served for the match at 5-4 but Naomi broke back and it went to a tiebreak. Keen served very well in the tiebreak and troubled Naomi with her sliced backhand, keeping her pinned to the baseline while getting to the net at every opportunity. Naomi wasn't able to raise her game to match Amanda and lost the breaker 7-3.
Speaking after her straight sets win, Katie O'Brien said “I'm really looking forward to the final. My results in Madrid gave me a lot of confidence and I've been playing well here. I haven't played Amanda for a couple of years but it should be a great match.”
Katie says that she's played Amanda before, but it must just have been in practise because I can't find any records of them playing in tournaments.
