RE: Davis Cup day 1: Rusedski v Stakhovsky

Greg breaks!!!

once again a double fault is served to give 15-40. once again both bps are saved. this time however, greg gets the first ad. then deuce, then ad S, then deuce, then ad then game Greg!

interestingly, and perhaps stupidly on Greg's part, it is S who is coming into the net to finish points off, Greg seems happy just to sit at the baseline and wait for one of them to make a mistake.

greg holds to love. that game showed why S is only 188 in the world, he's lost it mentally and it's affecting his game, I very much doubt he'll get it back this set but lets see what the Ukrainian captain can do during the break after the fourth set. (watch as he now holds to love!)

greg earns himself two set points (15-40) with a lovely passing shot down the line but they are saved, the first by a big ace, the second an error from Greg. S then earns a game point with an ace, and wins it. This guy has an excellent serve, it's not very fast but it almost always on the line, i guess if it was an off day it would be hopeless but that's not the case today.

5-4 t greg, serving for the set.

greg races to a 40-0 lead but is pegged back as S finds a flash of the form that won him the first set so easily. He can't sustain it though and sends a ball long giving Greg the fourth set! 6-4

i'm going to stop saying what i think will happen next as I've been wrong each time.

I'm also going to be away for about ten minutes but will continue posting as soon as I get back! hopefully greg will get an early break

Fifth set:

Rusedski 1-1 Stakhovsky
Rusedski has shrugged off his tiredness and races to the net to retrieve a drop-shot. He doesn't let a point slip as he holds serve.

Rusedski 0-1 Stakhovsky
After his collapse in the previous set, Stakhovsky starts well, holding to 15.

Greg gets himself out of danger after going 0-30 down, only to make a ue and gift S the bp. However, he save is. then another, and finally takes the game after a mamoth rally gives him a game point. 2-2 fifth set.

unfortunately, whatever the Ukraine captain said to his guy seems to have worked, hopefully that game will have crushed his spirit a little and Greg can break and hold before the next change over.

s holds to 15. Greg looks like he's found some more energy, he is now running down drop shots evertime and moving well around the court. He still needs to get a higher first serve percentage though!

greg holds for 3-3.

he got himself out of a whiff of danger at 15-30 down with a couple of great serves and some good volleying. He is a completely different player to the one who looked down and out towrads the end of the third set and beginning of the fourht.

S holds to 4-3 final set.

S made a huge ue (as wide out the tram lines) to give G 15-15 but Greg wasn't allowed anything till 40-15 when a super return winner caught S completely off guard. He went on to get himself a break point but it was saved by an ace and two more good first serves saw S take the game.

sorry i missed that game but Greg held to go 4-4 fifth set, he did face three break points though according to the commentators.

then S held to love to lead 5-4. Greg really needs to hold here or all is lost, literally.
