Davis Cup day 1: Rusedski v Stakhovsky

Sergiy Stakhovsky is ranked 184 with a career high of 173 reached earlier this year. He's had an ok year, reaching 2 challenger semis but has done nothing else. He's been beaten by Boggo and Martin Lee [on grass in straights]. He had an average junior career up until the 2004 US Open when he stormed through the draw to reach the final. Burst onto the scene in early 2005 by qualifying for ATP Milan and reaching the quarters, upsetting Mario Ancic. Since then he's reached a few challenger semis but his ranking his plateaued out. He's play 1 DC tie before, losing all 3 rubbers to Belgium [Vliegen and Elseneer beat him].

Rusedski says that his hip is feeling a lot better at the moment and he's confident of coming away with a victory. He feels that the clay courts in Odessa suit him because they're like the ones in Rome which are faster than usual [Rusedski had his best result of the year there, reaching rd3]. "The clay is a lot less taxing than hard courts because you can slide into the ball," he said yesterday. "The surface is pretty quick and the courts are quite slippery, so you can play an attacking game, which suits me."

Speaking ahead of the tie John Lloyd said “The way things have gone this week, and particularly the huge positive approach that has come from Greg since he arrived here on Sunday, I am hugely confident of ending the first day with a 2-0 lead,” said Lloyd who is clearly intent on victory in two days after naming a Rusedski/Murray tandem for Saturday’s doubles.

“Greg really is 110 per cent committed to the cause and is going to give it his all. Just his presence here has been great for the younger players but he has been going so well in practice that you just have to go with him. I really wasn’t too sure what to expect after hearing the things he was saying at the US Open about this probably being his last ever match but he’s had a few weeks' rest and then has worked so hard.

“He is still a player who comes with a big reputation and the youngsters in the Ukraine team will obviously be aware of what Greg has done in the game. Right now he is just what we need in the team but everything he’s said this week makes me think he will still be around to play next year.”

I've gone for Greg in 3 but I worry that Stakhovsky could cause him a few problems today. He's got very heavy groundstrokes from the back of the court and could just keep Greg pinned there and work him from side-to-side with lots of topspin which would be exactly what Greg doesn't want. If Stakhovsky manages to win one of the opening two sets and really prolongs this match, I fear Greg may be in a bit of trouble fitness-wise. We all saw how tired he was getting by the middle of the 2nd set against Henman in the US Open.

Match on court in about 10min.

I'm guessing that most people are still in bed

Anyone found live scores anywhere?  The Beeb has a live video webcast: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/default.stm, but I need something that can tick over in he background while I work

The Beeb will have game-by-game updates

I'll see if I can find a scoreboard, there should be an official Davis Cup one

There should be a Getronics Davis Cup scoreboard but I can't find it.

I'll provide live commentary and scores, they're just warming up right now, Stakhovsky having some volleys

There is something really cool which I have found, there are free highlights available from 2005 Davis Cup ties, go to:
http://www.daviscup.tv

You have to register but it's completely free !

I'm up and about, and about to watch! Can't provide commentary I'm afraid because my internet and tv are too far apart.

They're doing serves now

Spectators on the left and right of the court but none at the front or back

Scoreboard problems could be because the stadium scoreboard is manual not electronic

Well, greg has just been broken and I’ve got to say, deservedly so. S is a good clay-courter, and is deploying the drop shot will great results (greg just can’t get to it any more). Greg is standing very far behind the baseline and not looking comfortable there at all.

the comentators are really really annoying me at the moment, they keep digging at Mackin for missing the Vienna thing without giving his side of the story and worse than that they blamed Goddall for not being there

S just won his service game again leads 4-1.

Greg has made some silly errors in judgement this match but one just now from S took the prize. A mid-court drop shot off the serve needless to say, Greg smashed it away for a winner.

Just had a surreal vision of a future Davis Cup match, post Greg, and with Andy away (injured?)

The squad:

Jamie Baker, Jamie Delgardo, with Doubles team Jamie Murray and James (Jamie) Auckland.

That would confuse the opposition!

Greg loses the first set 6-1. He just doesn't look match fit and is making poor shot-selections because of it. For example, S seems to have a very good, solid backhand but Greg favours his forehand. Instead of mixing it up or even avoiding the backhand, Greg is being predictable and going for the forehand nearly every time.

[the commentators have said that either Greg is having a very bad day or he's struggling with an injury...where have they been?]

Greg's broken first game of the second set. It's really not looking hopeful. The way the two are playing at the moment S will race away with a straight sets win. But there's still a long way to go, perhaps Greg can turn it around.
