WARM RECEPTION AWAITS MURRAY AT 2006 ABERDEEN CUP

Andy Murray's impressive run at Flushing Meadows over the past 10 days is likely to guarantee the 19-year-old a homecoming to remember when he makes his next appearance back on home soil at the 2006 Aberdeen Cup this November.

The Davis Cup style, Scotland vs England team challenge - which takes place in Aberdeen over the weekend of 25/26 November - will be the British public's first opportunity to see Murray play in the UK following his fourth round US Open defeat at the hands of Nikolay Davydenko this afternoon.

Tournament organisers are expecting a big crowd at the AECC Press and Journal Arena for the two-day event as "Murraymania" continues to grip the country.

"We're expecting a great turnout," said Andrew White, CEO of Tournament Promoters, WSM. "Andy got a great reception when he led Scotland to victory at the inaugural Aberdeen Cup last November and the support is likely to reach fever pitch when he returns this year following his impressive run of performances over the past six months."

The 2006 Aberdeen Cup will see Murray lead a five-strong Scotland team against an England side led by Davis Cup team mate, Greg Rusedski, the British no.3. Murray will pair up with his older brother Jamie in the men's doubles - a partnership likely to attract interest from new British Davis Cup Captain, John Lloyd - against Rusedski and Britain's top-ranked doubles player, James Auckland. Murray will also face Rusedski twice in singles clashes over the course of the weekend where he'll be hoping to improve on last year's tally of one win apiece.

Now widely tipped as the bookies' favourite to collect the 2006 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award, Murray has enjoyed a phenomenal year with a series of outstanding performances on the ATP tour. The Glasgow-born British no.1 inflicted a rare defeat on world no.1 Roger Federer en route to the quarter-finals of last month's Cincinnati Masters Series and earlier this year recorded back to back victories over former world no.1's Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt to win his first ATP title in San Jose. A further defeat of Roddick saw him reach the fourth round of this summer's Wimbledon Championships.

Hmmm. If Greg has to withdraw from this also, I wonder who they could get to play for England?

I can't imagine too many English players would be eager to step up and be thrashed by Andy in front of his home crowd!

(and in case anybody new to the site thinks that is a Scottish taunt, I am English!)

but even next year when greg wont be around who will play or will they just shelve it totally? boggo's the next closest us 'english' have and i'm not sure if he'd want to take part, although a good showing at that kinda event could help his PR.


btw is this event always held in aberdeen? how come it doesnt swap between england and scotland each year like the ashes?

The Aberdeen Cup is not always going to be against England. They have thought ahead. In 2007 they are attempting to woo Spain to come to Aberdeen.

I would much rather see us thrash the English than struggle against the Spanish... and I suspect Andy will enjoy thrashing the English in front of his 'home' crown too!  Although, it certainly wouldn't be a bad thing to see Murray v Nadal in Scotland, it would also almost certainly enable the event to have extended media coverage.

From the draw it looks like it's going to be very close.

Auckland will probably beat Murray in two, Baltacha had a winning head-to-head over Katie O'Brien but given Katie's recent form and that Elena's beat out since May, I'd expect Katie to win that one. I'd think that Andy will beat Greg twice and possibly the Murray brothers will just shade the doubles over Auckland and Rusedski.

It could all be decided by the junior matches. I hope they really select the best English junior and the best Scottish junior this time, rather than the best U12s from each country. It'd be cool to have Graeme Dyce against Daniel Cox.
