These are the latest odds, so Andy is the second favorite. I like the fact that David Walliams is 20/1.
6/4 Zara Phillips 4/1 Andrew Murray 10/1 Darren Clarke 11/1 Monty Panesar 16/1 Steven Gerrard 16/1 I Woosnam 20/1 D Walliams 20/1 J Tomlinson 25/1 Nicole Cooke 25/1 Colin Montgomerie 25/1 Peter Crouch 33/1 David Healy 33/1 J Calzaghe 33/1 Paul Casey 40/1 Andrew Flintoff
Calzaghe should get IMO - to remain undefeated after so many bouts (40+) and to defeat the previously untouchable Jeff Lacy in such a convincing manner and he's the no1 in his weight category. If he was english he'd be a shoo in
No offence to zara and not to underestimate her win but such an elitest & minority sport should not win this...joe calzaghe's efforts far outweigh zaras IMO...Murray stil for me
i am torn between andy and Calzaghe but the fact that he's THE best in his field sways it for me. But again cos he's welsh and the lack of media focus on his field will count against him in my opinion...if it means that murray wins it though i wouldnt mind so much but anyone else and id be annoyed...
I know that rider's skill makes some difference, but I don't like sports involving something like horses or cars coming into it. Zara Phillips would not have done so well on a poor horse (as Schumi would not have done so well in, say, a Minardi)
Some of these people I have never even heard of. . .
Admittedly I don't watch much sport except tennis, F1 and cricket!
its actually wide open, so im not fuss who wins. don't know why steven gerrard 4th favourite! what has he done this year! i would like monty panesar to win, he has captured the nation with his style of bowling!!
also, if panesar does win, i hope he doesnt stay up all night to collect his award! remember a couple of years back, when england won team of year due to the 7 consecutive wins against NZ and West Indies, and they were shattered the next day against australia or was it another team?
as there's is still time to consider the shortlist, andy murray would have to do something impressive to win the award, though i would consider him as favourite for young personality award. is he able to win it twice?
if someone going to be favourite for the award come december, then my money's on colin montgomerie. ryder cup starts next week, so if he makes an impact there then he may be favourite.
For mad's benefit Darren Clarke - golfer? Monty Panesar - englands muttiah muralitharan - the first proper wicket taking (rather than containing) spinner in england in a longtime. Steven Gerrard - Liverpool and england midfielder, did absolutely nothing this year I Woosnam - another golfer? D Walliams - fat crap boxer, not good enough - no way better than calzaghe J Tomlinson - im not sure but i think this is jane tomlinson who has breast cancer and has been raising funds for cancer charities ($2 mill dollars) Nicole Cooke - cyclist who has been at the top or there abouts of her sport all year round Colin Montgomerie - golger Peter Crouch - lanky liverpool and england forward "who's got good touch FOR a big man". David Healy - NI & leeds striker who recently scored a hatrick and almost singlehandedly beat SPain 3-2 J Calzaghe - already covered Paul Casey - golfer Andrew Flintoff - no intro reqd
i think golf suck so not F all about it - i know who Woods is though!

Darren Clarke has been one of Europe's top golfers for the last decade or more, whose wife died a few months ago. He's in the Ryder Cup team, and if does well could be a massive story.
David Walliams isn't a fat crap boxer!? He's one half of the Little Britain comedy duo. He swam the English Channel and raised £1 million for Comic Relief. Fewer than 10% of people who have attempted to swim the Channel have succeeded. And his time of 10.5 hours puts him among the top 50 fastest swimmers to do so. Massively impressive for a 34-year old comedian.
I don't think it's been a very good year for British sport, so I'd probably vote for Andy at the moment, because it's very impressive what he's achieved at such a young age. Though, I sort of feel he should be winning it in a few years time when he's contending for Grand Slam titles, not now. I can't stand boxing so I wouldn't vote for Calzaghe.

David Walliams swim was very impressive and an excellant result. What worries me as a huge swimming fan, is that he is the only "swimmer" being given consideration. I'll only mention a couple of others as comparison, there are severel swimming champions this year : Kirsty Balfour - European Champion, Commonwealth Champion 200m Breaststroke Simon Burnett - Commonwealth Champion - fastest in the world this year over 100m Freestyle
Andy Murray has made the most improvement of any British athlete this year without any doubt - but in my opinion you have to have won an "important" championship to be considered as Britains best and am afraid Andy falls short there. Andy will win this one year but I don't believe it should be this year.
I hate boxing, but Calzaghe sounds like he is at the top of his sport, but would be very surprised if Zara Phillips doesn't win.
David Walliams being on the list shows that it is not the best that wins but the most known .

This award is voted for by the public, and hence it usually goes to someone from a sport with mass appeal, unless a sports-person from a minority sport does something really exceptional and captures the publics' attention.
David Walliams might get a runner-up prize, even though he's not strictly a sportsman, because of his mass appeal through little-britain.
flintoff won't get it because he won it last year and hasn't done as much this year, but he might get it next year if england retain the ashes this winter
to give an idea of which sports are most popular, the results from the last 20 years are :
