It does seem really unfair to me, I think they should change the rules so that qualifying for a futures gives 1 ranking point as so often players do really well to qualify and then draw the top seed or the 'on form' player in the first round.

I agree, it seems so unfair particularly when a player has had to win through 3 or 4 rounds and then gets a dreadful rd1 draw and has nothing to show for his efforts apart from maybe 100 euros which is just enough to pay the hotel expenses.

That's a fantastic win for Richard !!! Valtzer was the 7th seed and was ranked over 1400 places higher

Baccanello really will be a step up in class though, he's the 4th seed, ranked 397 and he's cruised through each of his matches so far. He reached a high of 129 in 2003, he won Spain F29 last week, he's made two more futures finals and two futures semis aswell as a challenger semi. In 2005 he beat Andy Murray on the way to reaching the Vancouver challenger final.

Just found out that Baccanello bt Brooks 6-3, 6-3

Fantastic week though for Richard, he will now move up from 1440 to approximately 1171
