I was worried that after losing the 4-1 2nd set lead, Anne might collapse but it hasn't happened. She showed great mental strength to come back and win that breaker. Let's hope she can get on top early in the 3rd.
Anne Keothavong found Belarussian Tatiana Poutchek too strong in the first round of the Sunfeast Open in India on Monday.
The British No.1 fought her way back into the match by taking the second set, but fell 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 in the WTA Tier III event in Kolkata.
Keothavong hit form early in the second set when she raced into a 4-1 lead and kept her nerve after Poutchek forced a tie-break to level at one set all.
The Middlesex player, who turned 23 on Saturday, lost her serve early in the decider, though, and couldn’t force her way back into the contest.
Poutchek is ranked 20 places higher than Keothavong at No.118 on the WTA list and has been as high as No.55.
Poutchek has been in good form recently – she reached the final of the $50,000 event in the Bronx, USA, in August and qualified for the main draw at the US Open a week later.
It was the second time the two players had met this year after Poutchek beat Keothavong in straight sets in Australia in January.
The Londoner will now turn her attention to the doubles event in Kolkata where she will face Poutchek once again in the first round.
Keothavong and Italian partner Alberta Brianti are due to face the Belarussian and her Russian partner Alla Kudryavtseva.
