Main draw:

Rd1: R Brooks [GB]wr:1422] v M Perez [Esp][wr:638]

J Ward [GB][wr:1325] v M Cuellar [Esp][wr:1422]

Fantastic draw for James, against another qualifier. Even better news for him is that if he wins he will face another qualifier in rd2, who knocked out the 2nd seeded Togoan no 1 and legendary champion of Senegal F1 in rd1.

That's a great win for James Ward, his first ranking point since the beginning of June. He's still only 19 and has been putting in lots of hard work getting through lots of futures qualies and he's got his reward. Great chance now for him to get through to the quarters against a Spanish qualifier with a lower ranking.

Richard Brooks' result had to be expected against a player ranked about 800 places higher.

Dreadful result for Alan Wright, somehow I didn't notice earlier either that he was in the qualies or in the main draw His opponent was from Panaman and is 19, Gonzalez reached a high of no 45 in juniors in 2005 but he's currently only got 1 ranking point.

Wow, fantastic result for James, great to see him taking advantage of that draw. I believe that's the first time he's made a futures quarter-final The points gained should move him up into the 1100s.

James' quarter has been a very fortunate one to be in, Alan Wright replaced the 7th seed as a lucky loser and after the 2nd seed lost in rd1, that left Perez [ranked 1008] as the highest player left in it. James reaching the semis is definately possible.

Perez-Perez beat Alan's conqueror the unranked wildcard 6-2, 7-5 in rd2.

James and Perez have played twice before, Perez won 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in 2005 but in July James thrashed him 6-1, 6-2 !

James' ranking will now rise to approximately 1116. A really great week for him, it'd be interesting to see how he does in GB futures having had all this experience on clay.
