RE: Orleans 75K Challenger

Surprised that Jonny's 2nd set was so close but still a good win for him. He hasn't been in action since Graz in mid-August so maybe he's a little rusty.

Great win for Auckland, Mannarino was always going to be tough having done well in futures this year and has a lot of support on mtf. With it being indoors, I thought James would have the edge and it was good to see him come through such a tight one.

Jonny and James have played once before, in rd1 of ATP Nottingham qualies back in 2001. Jonny won 6-1, 6-3. With it being indoors it'll be very close, both players have very attacking games and come to the net a lot. Will probably come down to how well both serve. I pick James to win as I think he has the edge over Jonny from the baseline.

Should be a fairly easy starting match for Mackin. Morel is ranked 828, he reached a high of 525 in early 2005. His best result this year was reaching the final of a future in Israel on hard courts in February. He's just lost in rd2 of 3 successive challenger qualies. Hopefully Mackin will make that 4.

No result for the Loglo-Golubev match so I don't know who Parmar's 1st round opponent is.

Rd2 qualies:
J Marray [GB] bt J Auckland [GB][8] 6-7, 6-1, 6-4

J Loglo [Togo] bt A Parmar [GB][2] 6-7, 6-4, 7-6

A Mackin [GB][4] bt C Morel [Fr] 6-7, 6-2, 6-1

Great win for Marray over Auckland, I wonder what happened in the 2nd set after such a close 1st. I was convinced that we'd have an all-Brit 3rd round match but amazingly Arvind lost to the unranked Togoan wildcard who'd upset Golubev earlier in the day. I'm not sure what's happened to Loglo this week but he must be unquestionably in, by far and away the best form of his life, he's currently unranked and has never been higher than 1210 and in his last tournament he lost to an unranked player in straight sets. Hopefully Marray can put a stop to his run in rd3.

Good win for Mackin, looks like it was very comfortable after the 1st set. He's likely to play 5th seed Conor Niland in tomorrow's qualifying round, Niland's rd2 result isn't up yet

Jean-Kome LOGLO holds the national record for Togo for greatest number of Davis Cup wins and ties played.  Though he rarely plays in Futures/Challengers.

Komlavi LOGLO, who of course is the holder of much-coveted Senegal F1 title, is the Togoan number 1.

The last year Togo played in the Davis Cup was 2003, and they (Loglo, Loglo & Gakpo) won 4 out of 4 matches all 3-0.

Never underestimate a Togoan.

Well done to both the boys for qualifying, it's great to see Jonny get a string of wins again, long may it continue!

A total of 5 brits in this main draw, that is good going!  For full results of qualies and the main draw, go to the ATP site, http://www.atptennis.com/3/en/tournaments/challenger/

Lee could get Olivier Rochus in the 2nd round if he gets past his 1st round opponent. Not sure why someone such as Rochus being in the top 30 and all would be doing a challenger when he could have been in Bucharest or Beijing this week at an ATP Tour level tourney.

Qualifying rd3 results: Just to give the actual scores:

J Marray [GB] bt K Loglo [Tog] 6-7[5], 7-6[4], 6-1

A Mackin [GB] bt C Niland [Ir] 6-4, 6-3

After missing out in Graz in his last tournament it's good to see Jonny coming through challenger qualifying. Mackin did well to beat Niland so comfortably, the Irishman won GB F12 last month, thrashing Childs 1 and 1 along the way. He has been playing on clay for the last two weeks which would have been to Mackin's advantage.

This is really weird. I thought top 50 players could not play in Challengers except in very special circumstances, such as it being their home country - and Orleans is not in Belgium!

Also, he must be getting a lot of appearance money, he cannot be doing it for the ranking points. He has no points to defend this week, his 18th result is 75, and he would only get 70 points for winning the entire thing as far as I can see. . .

I think they can only enter as a wildcard, but why they`d want to is beyond me.

Looking ahead to the main draw:

Martin Lee has a tricky rd1 tie against 17 year old Latvian Ernests Gulbis who's already ranked 201 !!!! Gulbis reached two challenger finals on clay in July and he's reached 4 futures finals aswell this year, winning two. He has a win over Richard Bloomfield indoors earlier this year. If it was on a slower surface I'd favour Gulbis but as it's indoors I reckon that Martin may just edge this in 3 sets. He's very, very unlucky that if he wins Olivier Rochus is likely to be awaiting in rd2. I read that Rochus has been injured recently so he's using this challenger as match practise for the indoor season.

Jonny faces fellow big server Gilles Elseneer. Elseneer has played only 1 tournament since losing to Colin Fleming in the Nottingham Challenger, he lost in rd2 of US Ope qualies. Elseneer won the Andrezieux challenger earlier this year indoors but since then his form has been poor. However he's at his best indoors. Hopefully the fact that Jonny has already won 3 matches here will give him an advantage as Elseneer may be a little rusty having not competed indoors since March.

Boggo is the 6th seed, in rd1 he faces the big serving, 28 year old Dutchman Peter Wessels who’s ranked 223. It’ll be a tough match for Alex as Wessels has been in the top 100, reaching a high of no 72 in February 2005. In his last tournament, Wessels reached the final round of US Open qualifying before losing to Lukasz Kubot who went on to reach rd3. However, before then he’d lost 10 of his past 11 matches, a sequence stretching back to April. It’ll be an interesting clash of styles with Bogdanovic, the hard-hitting baseliner up against Wessels who will look to get into the net as much as possible. Alex will be relishing the chance to compete again on his favoured indoor hard courts, the faster pace and lower, skidding bounce suits his game down to the ground.

Bloomers has Moroccan wildcard Hicham Arazi. Arazi is of course a former top 50 player, in 2001 he reached a high of 22. However, a succesion of injuries have meant that his ranking has dropped to 868 and at 32, he's nothing like the player he once was, full of trickery with angles and slices. This year he's played 4 tournaments. In March he reached 1 final and 2 quarter-finals of three tournaments on Moroccan clay. However, another injury then kept him out until August. He made his comeback on Italian clay in the qualifying for the San Marino challenger, however he lost in rd1 against a player ranked 651, being forced to retire at 0-2 down in the 3rd set and that injury has kept him out until now. I predict Bloomers to win in straights. More good news for Richard is that the 8th seed George Bastl lost in rd1 today and Richard was due to face him in rd2.

Mackin has a very tough match against the 7th seeded Frenchman Jerome Haehnel. Haehnel is ranked 144 and has been as high as no 78. He's in very good form having won the Como challenger on clay a couple of weeks ago. They've played once before, Haehnel won 6-4, 6-2 in 2001 on indoor hard in rd2 of a futures in France. Mackin has achieved some of his best results indoors though, it's probably his best surface along with grass. Hopefully he can achieve a good upset here.

I've read that Rochus has been injured and he wants to get lots of match practise on the indoors before the big money ATP tourneys and he feels that the best way to do this is in a challenger. Hopefully Martin sends him packing nice and early in rd2

I think that's the reason why he and jamie murray aren't playing doubles anywhere this week. I thought that the team weren't meeting up in Vienna until next week but from reading andy murray's blog it seems that they're meeting up later this week, andy says he's flying there on Wednesday.
