Well, sadly but unsurprisingly Tim didn't manage to beat Federer so ends the tournament with 670.
However, the pins were working furiously on this thread and Gicquel is now the nearest competitor. He can overtake Tim by reaching the quarters. As can Moodie and Spadea. Beyond them, Becker can if he reaches the semis, Safin, if he reaches the semis, Kubot if he reaches the semis, Agassi if he reaches the semis, and there's a couple more but we'll start thinking about them when they get a but further.
The point is, Tim is looking relatively safe at 58, a rise of 4 places from last week.

Well Gicquel is Tim's biggest threat at the moment, although he did a good deed by removing Gaudio from Andy's list of competitors! He can overtake by winning his next match, unfotunately for us it's against some guy called federer so he might just have a chance
After that we get to the Agassi slayer. Becker will overtake if he reaches the semis, to do so he would have to add Roddick and Hewitt or Gasquet to his collection of scalps.
Behind him is Safin. Safin can pass Tim by reaching the semis, but as mentioned elsewhere on this board he will have to play 3 matches in as many days to reach the quarters.
Finally I should mention, Novak will cause problems if he reaches the final.
The draw means that all four of these players could potentially pass Tim, so worst case is a drop of 4places to 62 (where he started the week) and best case is no change at 58 (a rise of 4).

Small update: Benjamin couldn't match Boris and win a grand slam as a qualifier.......
Also Davide Sanguinetti has entered the Genoa Challenger. He can't overtake, so no pins please - he might knock out some of Boggo & Greg's competitors.
So there's only Safin & Gicquel left to worry about.
So the hexing strategy for Tim fans becomes pins into Gicquel & Safin.
For Andy fans, its a lot more complicated: Safin is playing Haas, who must go out now if Andy is to overtake if he beats Davydenko and then Safin. Gicquel is playing Federer, and I know which Semi- final opponent I'd prefer Andy to face. hmmmm...
Well, I think we can probably rely on a certain R. Federer to dispose of Gicquel for us. . .
Safin - we can surely let him beat Haas for Andy's sake, as he is more than 100 points behind Tim, and his points would only rise another 100 by this win. As long, that is, as he obligingly loses in the NEXT round - hopefully to Andy himself, which would solve all the problems nicely!
Rob, I carefully worded my post so that I didn't give away that we disagreed slightly on Safin's points and PM'd you, then you go and give it away yourself! Honest lad!

Tim's table is updated. Safin & Gicquel both bowed out before overtaking him. So that's Tim safe at World Ranking 58, up 4 on the week, so not bad considering his terrible draw.
Serra, Mathieu and Mayer are defending some big points from last year, so Tim will start by gaining places.
However, it would probably take a miracle for Tim not to lose places after that: 14 of those behind him on the table are playing in Beijing or Bucharest, plus Serra, Mathieu and Mayer.
The only good news is that Ram- Ham, his closest competitor has a quarter- final from Bucharest to defend, so can't overtake immediately.
