RE: Andy's Competitors Weeks 35 and 36: US Open

I've updated the table. Blake and O Rochus still have to play their second round matches.

Other than that there was basically no change, as Madeline said Andy will now gain two places if he wins against Gonzalez.

Also, those behind Andy must now reach the quarters with him going out today in order to overtake.

Blake played yesterday, Bethan. The outstanding matches are Ollie Rochus v Sweeting and Nalbandian v Safin.

Thanks Madeline, I really have no idea why I got it into my head Blake hadn't played. Possibly from checking the OOP already and seeing Blake's name. I will correct that now.

As Imoen said, nobody can overtake Andy today. But any pins going spare could be stuck into a was model of Gaudio, who is nearest to him in the table at the moment

There should be no spare pins, all into Gonzo.

Well, Andy plays Gonzo before the Gaudio match, so a quick removal of pins from Gonzo and into Gaudio would be fine!

time for that to happen now.

Andy's win means he is now at number 16 in the world.

He has to reach the semis to get any higher though.

Wouldn't rule out the semis now, but the main thing is that 16 is the magic number.

Top 8 the next target!!!

My pins will now take a rest unitl the next round. Don't want to abuse them

Nah, I can spare a few for Gaudio first. He lost the first set but is now serving for the second. THEN I'll start on the wax model of Davydenko.

The table's updated.

Well the pins in Gaudio worked a treat Giquel's thrugh to the fourth round, and about to threaten Tim! We all know about Gonzalez as well

Looks like some secret pins were also going into Djokovic, Tursunov and Ferrer!, as they all went out.

Also disappearing from the threat list were  Verdasco, Malisse, Moya and Wawrinka.

Hewitt is looking ominous, just 185 points behind now; Gasquet ansd Youzhny also won, while  Ginepri, Rochus and Haas have still to play or finish their R3 matches.

Meanwhile Berdych put himself  out of reach of a semi- finalist Murray.

Over to Imoen, to let us know when they'll overtake, when Andy will rise and which Russians and Australians to put the pins into!

Welcome back Rob, I hope you had a fun time sailing.

Firstly, after Murray's win last night I did a few calculations whilst still in exuberunt mood, so if Andy WINS the Us Open here's what'll happen!

He will move up to number 6 in the world (another 10 places higher) of which 5 are definite. The other five depend on Robredo losing before the quarters (ie in the fourth), Roddick and Blake losing before the semis, Berdych and Haas losing before the final.

So get the pins working on those guys and on everyone Andy has to beat to get there!

On a more realistic note...

If Andy beats Davydenko he won't move any places higher. For that he needs to reach the semis, when he would overtake Ferrer and Haas if Haas loses before the quarters.

If he reaches the final, he would gain at least 3 further places and if Berdych were sporting enough to lose before the semis then Andy would enter the top 10.

Behind him, things are looking better. Those players we forgot to put pins in lost anyway surely out of support for our cause.  And the pins in Gaudio worked a treat (sorry UFF i know you lost a lot of ams on that match but really you should check this thread before betting, we weild real power over here!).

That leaves us with, Hewitt, Gasquet, O Rochus, Ginepri and Youzhny to worry about (there are a few more further down but we'll worry about them when they get to a more dangerous position).

Hewitt much reach the Semis, Gasquet and everyone else the final or the winner. So maximum to overtake Andy (based on the fact that there are only two final spaces!) is three, taking him back to 19, where he started.

Safin beat Rochus 6-3 6-2 6-3, so that's another one gone!

Unfortunately Hewitt and Gasquet can't both lose, but at least one will!!

The table's updated. Hewitt and Youzhny advance. Gasquet, Rochus and Ginepri are defeated.

I've also edged the table up as far as Roddick, and cut off all below Ginepri.

OK Bethan, who're we concentrating on now? A Russian and a German?
