So Andy gains a place as Hewitt drops out of the top 20. Other big losers are Blake, Ginepri (who's fallen off the table to 44th from 21st), Hrbaty, Gasquet, Malisse and of course Agassi, who's now sitting around 175- 185th in the world, as he loses 700 of his 925 points.
No- one overtakes Andy, but big gainers are Gaudio, Calleri, Acasuso, Monfils and Chela, who have already made up for the points they're defending after going out in R1 last year.
Pretty much anyone in the tournament can overtake, as you get 1,000 points for winning the tournament. No- one can overtake unless they get to the fourth round, though. Only Gaudio and Djokovic can do that.
More detailed pinning strategis will, I'm sure come from Imoen later, as will many changes to this and the other tables.

Explain 1000 pts for a first round win please
too many hours spent looking at spreadsheets. entry corrected.
Andy needs to get to the fourth round to be able to overtake anyone. Only Ferrero is within range if he does. A Quarter- final place will mean Haas and Niemenen are in view. A Semi- final slot brings Ferrer and Berdych into range.
If he makes the final, a top- ten place is possible, with Baghdatis, Roddick, Stepanek, Blake, Ancic and Gonzalez in line, and a US Open Champion Murray would be close to(possibly in) the top 5, with Davydenko and Robredo at that distance away.
I've chickened out this week and am waiting for the ATP to update before doing my table so I'll check against Rob's tomorrow morning sometime and point out any mistakes I spot!
As for detailed analysis, that will also have to wait until I've done my table, but i promise to come up with the goods in the morning!

From the look of things, both Andy and Greg are pretty safe for most of week 1. However Greg & Boggo need every bit of sharpened metal we can find on Monday & Tuesday. Especially if Tim beats Greg.

Blime, what a difference a year makes!
Yep, it's incredible the rise he's made. Go Andy!!
I'm currently working on my table but the ATP site is being especially slow and the tennisfacts...well I'm not sure what they've done but its all wrong!

Tennisfacts have forgotten to add any points from New Haven (?!) and have also forgotten that Toronto and Cincinatti are compulsory tournaments. I've emailed Fredrik, so you never know, he might sort it......

Well, on top of that, they have the wrong people defending the wrong number of points?! This is especially annoying as the 'results history' page on the ATP, normally my lifesaver is 'currently unavailable' ! Oh well.
By the way, look on the steveg site for the tournies defended next week, it's under 'points schedule 2006' and is very good!

The ATP site is a right pain in the posterior this morning. . .
I pretty gave up on tennisfacts a few weeks ago, and take the figures from the ATP, although tennisfacts do seem to get the points being defended pretty much correct.
With the ATP as it is this morning goodness knows when I will be happy with my spreadsheet!
Well, as Rob has shown. This week we once again see both the advantages and disadvantages of being so high up in the rankings. No more can Andy make a 10 place jump by winning in the first round, he must get to the third round to draw level with Ferrero (who will probably have jumped further ahead by then anyway) and the fourth to move past Nieminen. BUT all that (and andy overtaking any more people) depnds on them going out before they get beyond reach. So, any spare moment you have...put a few pins in those above Andy.
On the other hand, we also see the advantage of being so in the lofty reaches of the ranking system. Fewer people can overtake by winning the first round!
As Rob said Gaudio and Djokovic are the first ones who can overtake, and it would take them until the fourth round to do so, Plus that's presuming Andy goes out in round 1. So pins into them but at the moment there is nothing much we can do as too much depends on what happens in the first round, we will know more once a few rounds are complete.
So head on over to Tim, Greg and Alex to help them out with all that spare malice.
I expect that the US open will not change Andy's ranking spot...unless he has a terrible tournament or an extraordinary one.

Yeah, that's what I've been doing but the ATP site this morning keeps telling me it has too much traffic on the player pages
Oh well, I'm sure my spreadsheet will sort itself out eventually!

First post updated after tennisfacts and steveg rankings have been posted, and with help from Madeline.
Only one material change: Tursunov was defending less points than I'd thought, pushing him up the rankings, otherwise, there's just a bunch of 18th & 19th results, which don't make a difference in Grand Slam week. Will probably have to update again once the ATP points breakdown is working again.
