The battle of the veteran Brits is one of the picks of the rd1 clashes at the US Open.
They've played 9 times, Henman leads 7-2 on head-to-heads and has won their last 6 matches.

Both players are extremely unlucky to have drawn each other in rd1 and even more unlucky to have Fed most likely awaiting in rd2. You have to feel for Tim who's had dreadful draws since Wimbledon and has been playing pretty well. If Greg loses in rd1 here, he's going to be struggling to even make the qualifying entry list for the indoor Masters this autumn and is going to have to qualify for tournaments like Vienna and Basel.
My money is on Henman, he is more solid than Greg in every department apart from the serve. However, Greg doesn't really have the returning ability to hurt Tim in this area. Tim likes to block his returns back which makes things difficult for an oncoming serve-volleyer. I think Greg may take the 1st set but then I predict Henman to wear him down in 4 sets.
They also played two tight matches during the British Championships at Telford, I hope I am spelling it right. It is funny, I would keep up with the British Championships as back then the LTA would have live scores for these matches, or maybe that was after Greg and Tim played, but anyway, I remember them playing twice and Tim winning them both. I know they both took them seriously as they were both close matches with Tim winning both. I think that was back in 95 and 96, but can't be sure as the ATP site does not count these as match ups.
After all that, I think Tim will beat him in straights....opps....nearly forgot that he likes to throw in the odd blip....so time in four sets. I don't give Greg much chance unless Tim is hurt.
I spent a week in Portland, Oregon for a wedding which was nice. Great drive coming from Bozeman. Then after coming back my wife had a crazy list of jobs for me around the house, painting & flooring (that laminate nightmare stuff). And as a real kicker work decided to get far too busy and at all times just as the US Open is to begin. I have not been this busy since the World Cup. No peace for the wicked I guess.
They're playing 24 men's R1 matches per day on Monday and Tuesday then the final 16 on Wednesday - the matches held over are the top 1/8th of the draw (Fed -> Ferrero, including Greg v Tim), the 4 matches in the section Ginepri -> Haas and the 4 matches in the section Vliegen -> Davydenko.

Good audio interview of Henman talking about his match with Greg. As heard in the interview I would not be surprised if this is Tim & Greg's last US Open. I wish they had had a better draw. I think Tim can keep going, but after being so solid over the years I know he does not want to be up there in the 60s and 70s with no chance of winning a slam anymore.
He does not say he is soon to retire, but he didn't rule it out either and mentioned his back again! I guess I am sad as I really thought he would win at least one Wimbledon, 20 years ago with the old wooden raquets I think he would have. Anyway, here is the interview:
