US Open qualies

Thanks for the replies and the links - fantastic and much appreciated.

There were no list of alternates for the qualies - how far from getting in are Naiktha and Katie S I wonder. I feel Katie S isn't far from kick starting her season; she has had a few better results recently, and it is sad if she just misses out. Jodie B is another, who started the year so well, and it would have been nice to see her make the qualies and see how she would have done. A bit frustrating really - if Heather ends up having to qualify rather than making it direct, it means that lots of our players have just failed to make cut offs, which is a shame.

I also know that there is no thread for this and I wouldn't really want to start another, but does anyone know anything definitive about how Katie B's back injury is progressing - she has lost virtually the whole season to injury now and her ranking is really falling - hopefully she will be fit and back on court soon. I imagine if she isn't fit and playing pre-US Open tournaments, that she will withdraw from the US - hope I am wrong.

Still not official, but a couple of posters on TF are saying they've heard that x player is x on the alt list, and both add up, so we are looking something like this for the Q alt list:

1. Shimizu
2. Muhammad
3. Bains
4. Serban
5. Jaksic
6. Glushko
7. Frech
8. Kostova
9. Grabher
10. Swan

Naiktha is almost certainly there when you take out the MDWCs, but there are still ? over how many of those will be in the current Q lists. It'll probably be around 5, so Katie will likely need an additional 5 withdrawals in the next 10 or so days.

Marino withdrew today (included in this list), so you never know.

Thanks Ace for that post - hopefully Katie S will make the draw, if that list is correct and Naiktha should be there.

Kristie Ahn receives a MDWC - likely due to her performance at San Jose.r

Me too Andy, Katie's been involved in the last 5 slams in some capacity, 2 obviously as a MDWC, but in the 3 overseas slams she made the FQR twice, so it would be nice to keep that going, and she would have 30 points dropping off.

Kaylah McPhee is officially in today with a ranking of 230, and Naiktha was 233 at the same ranking cut off point of July 29th, so unless there's a plethora of players using PR between those spots, she's basically all but there. Mind, she lost to Freya last week and Rush1ti (800 odd) today, so it doesn't really bode well, but if you get into to quallies and get the chance to play at the likes of New York, you've obviouly got to go for it.

It was one of those cumulative point systems they often do to guarantee a WC (which I know the returning JonH is a big fan of), so SJ was a massive part of that. Di Lorenzo had to win a couple more rounds in Toronto but lost to Bertens yesterday, so Ahn clinched it, and subsequently withdrew from Landisville, which should in turn help Harriet as they were due to meet in R2.

Ahn was in the Q list, so that's one more to take out, and Naiktha and Katie S move a step closer.

In some way directly earned Slam WCs vs discretionary Slam MD WCs

Hey folk, we got through Wimbledon this year with barely a cheep from me on the principle of discretionary Slam MD WCs

Current US Open WC situation:

1. Ahn (pre tournament top point scorer) - was in quals
2. Parry (French selection) - not in quals list
3. USTA Nationals U18 winner - still in progress, but top seeds are the likes of Baptiste, Navarro, Volynets etc. who some will recognise from the ITF scene (and jrs), none of these are in the qual list
4. Gauff - I think it's fair to assume she will get one after all the talk, and not entering quals - not in quals list
TBC
5. Aussie pick - I don't know their intention. I've saw no talk of a playoff like the used to do. Hon was just given their recent RG WC, Stosur is a former USO champ and didn't qualify directly, so they may just give it to her. I'd say it would be pretty likely this player would already be in the qual list
6.
7.
8.

The NCAA winner was Spanish so that will revert to a normal WC, which are to be announced, but probably looking at the likes of McNally, Osuigwe as well as those just outside the cut like Townsend, but more than likely these players will be removed from the Q list. Kuznetsova could be interesting - she is a former winner, got a MDWC last year, is first alt, but didn't enter quals - there could be one main draw withdrawal in the next 10 days or so, before the Q draw, to allow her in directly, but if not, she may get another WC, and that would be another not in the list.

So 3 definitely won't be in the list (Parry, Gauff, U18 winner), and up to 5 will. The more the better as far as Katie is concerned.

If Haddad Maia is on the list then that should be another move closer for Katie S assuming she remains suspended.

Quite an interesting final tonight (2) Volynets (17 y/o) vs (3) Navarro (18 y/o), currently 412 and 451 respectively in the WTA rankings, and a first slam main draw appearance on the line for the winner as well as putting their names amongst previous recent winners such as Kenin, Bellis, Davis and Rogers.

Looks like it starts at 2pm local, so 10pm here and available on the Livestream website. Might have that on in the background to Nadal-Medvedev.

And yet our players ranked 250-400 aren't considered worthy of a place in the Wimbledon draw even at the expense of not using wildcards at all

Yeah, would have been nice if a few others got a chance, but then I guess that's the difference between an indepedant club, with their own event at the forefront of their intentions, generally calling the shots, rather than a governing body with their players more in mind.

I suppose here, the USTA are also investing in youth and ensuring someone under 18 will get that place so they can gain the slam experience to hopefully push on like the likes of Kenin did, rather than giving them to the Jamie Loeb's or Asia Muhammad's,which might have been some of our equivalents, but there'd certainly be no harm giving the likes of Emma and Fran a go, a free hit at 60 points, £45k in the bank to invest in their career, rather than going next in and only 2 Brits getting the guaranteed chance to play (via a MDWC).

After a couple of largely damp squib Canadian finals, from a neutral perspective anyway, there's a link to this final if anyone still has a tennis fix and wants to watch. The younger Volynets has made a fast start.

Edit - Volynets won in 2 (great name for a tennis player) and joins Ahn and Parry officially in the main draw.

Cibulkova has withdrawn from the USO.

There could be a decent chance that Katie S sneaks in after all. Cibulkova withdrawing doesn't directly affect things as Kuznetsova gets in to the main draw, but she was MDO, so no qualifiers are removed from the list to cater for that. However, Kuznetsova may have had an outside shot of a MDWC if she didn't get in directly - she's been playing well in the US, a former champ, got one last year, controversy over not getting a Visa to play in DC etc. so that potential WC option is gone, and if Gauff, McNally and Osiugwe are all but nailed on, the 4th and final discretionary pick (Rogers, Townsend, Lepchenko, McHale etc. and NOT Svetlana) will almost certainly come from someone already in the Q list to help Katie's cause.

Zhuk withdrew the other day and was replaced by Shimizu. Korpatsch withdrew today and was replaced by Muhammad, so Naiktha is next in (and a certainty), and going back to that previous post:

1. Shimizu
2. Muhammad
3. Bains
4. Serban
5. Jaksic
6. Glushko
7. Frech
8. Kostova
9. Grabher
10. Swan

If there were 8 MDWCs to be removed from the list then Katie would likely get in, but it's looking like 5, so she will still likely need 3 more withdrawals. As mentioned earlier, Haddad Maia could well be removed in the coming days, and it would be quite ironinc if Swan's good friend Katie B delayed her comeback a week or 2 and was the final player to withdraw, and Katie S sneaked in as a result. Somewhat bittersweet for this forum.
