The 121SPORTS 2006 US Open Tennis Tipping Competition runs from the 28th August - 10th September, 2006.
Each entrant in the competition is given a “virtual” bank of 1000 units. Entrants must bet on at least two matches per day (but not more than 4 bets per day in total).
The odds for each match will be provided by 121SPORTS based on those provided by a reputable bookmaker. You must wait for the odds to be posted by 121SPORTS on www.121s.com each day before making your selections. Selections must be made prior to the start of the first match of each day. For those of you who are unfamiliar with sports betting, please click here for further information.
Selections must have some rationale in order to be considered valid. In other words, you need to provide some reasons for your predictions. Please click here for guidelines as to what will be considered acceptable rationales. There is a certain element of subjectivity in evaluating rationales. You do not have to write a lengthy paragraph, but a few sentences explaining why you think a player will win or lose, or how a match will unfold is required.
You also need to indicate how many units you are placing on your selections, e.g., Agassi beat Ginepri (250 units). Any bets that do not include the number of units will be considered as 50 unit bets by default. You can bet as much as you like each day but must bet at least 50 units in total for any given day (or the remainder of your bank if you have less than 50 units).
Winners will be determined by the highest banks at the end of the tournament. The $1000 will be divided between the top 7 finishers ($500 1st, $200 2nd, $100 3rd, $50 4th, $50 5th, $50 6th, $50 7th. Payment will be made by Paypal or cheque.
Each day the leader board will be updated, so there is no need to calculate your bank.
Note that all bets will be void for any match that is not completed due to the retirement of a competitor.
Other considerations:
If an entrant fails to produce at least 2 tips for a given day, s/he will incur a 100 unit penalty. Invalid tips (i.e. without an adequate rationale) are not considered in scoring and may also incur a penalty at the discretion of the competition managers.
If more than 4 bets are placed on a given day, only the first 4 will be considered in scoring and there will be no further penalty.
Late entrants are allowed until the start of play on the 1st of September but entrants will have a starting bank of 650 units.
Tips that have been edited (as indicated by the time-stamped watermark) after the day starts will be considered invalid.
Any entrant who is penalized for 3 consecutive days will be automatically disqualified, regardless of whether they have remaining units.
Entrants who attempt to sign up using multiple accounts will be immediately banned. If there is more than one person who would like to be included in the competition from your household, please email the moderator at moderator@121s.com to ask for an exception.
Betting options: Betting options will include betting on the winner and set betting. However, set betting may not be available for all matches, as odds are not always offered for matches between lesser-known players. Set betting will be available for as many matches as possible. If you need help with betting terms, check out the Betting Guide.
Time zone considerations and final day betting: The daily odds will be up as quickly as possible. If for any reason you are unable to wait for the odds to be posted, you can create a post in the Members Competition specifying which players you wish to bet on and for how many units. Please do not abuse this allowance as it does create more work for the competition managers. If you wish to keep your bets for the final day of betting private, you are welcome to email Aznemesis your predictions at aznemesis_121@yahoo.com and she will post them up soon after the start of play.
Night matches: You are welcomed to bet on the night matches. However, you will have a shorter window for posting bets the following day if you choose to do so. After the conclusion of the day matches, a leader board will be posted. The leader board will state where all entrants stand at that point. After the night matches are over, the leader board will be updated to reflect any changes.
Exceeding your bank: If for any reason an entrant posts tips that add up to more than s/he has in his or her bank, the competition managers will decrease each bet to bring it within the limit. For example, if you post two tips @ 150 units each, but you only have 200 units in your bank, the competition managers will decrease each tip to 100 units each. Reasonable efforts will be made to take an equal amount out of each bet, but the competition managers reserve the right to use their best judgment in this matter.
