Great fightback, probably found it difficult getting used to the surface

v Valentina Sassi (ITA) [WR:208]
Edit: Checked her results, no surprise to see her as predominately clay court specialist, not much success on hardcourts except she lost in a 25k final way back in January in America. Good luck Mel
Tough matches for both girls. Borwell's opponent lost in the 1st round of Washington but she made the semis at Lexington. Takao had won 14 out of 15 matches so far, all 25k wins coming from Japan, so hopefully the slow hardcourts will benefit Katie.
All the girls are playing at 11am New York (4pm BST) so hopefully we will know the results by the end of today.
Katie O`Brien (GBR) v Erika Takao (JPN) 6-0 6-7(9) 6-1
Valentina Sassi ITA def. Melanie South GBR 67(2) 61 64
Natalie Grandin RSA def. Sarah Borwell GBR 60 61
Unlucky for Mel, she won the 1st set but faded hope she not injured Sarah finding life difficult begin a top 200 player, hope she does well in the US Open qualies. Well done to Katie, dug deep despite losing 11-9 in the 2nd set tiebreaker, where she probably had match points.
Im thinking with Forest Hills (Tier 4) tournament next week, do you think Mel and Sarah may enter the qualies and get some much needed match practice for the US Open qualies
Edit: just checked the entry list, they only have one wildcard given by the USTA. with no tournaments next week on the ITF circuit, when does the US qualies actually start?
Next up Eva HRdinova of Czech Republic, 22 years old ranked 231 for singles and 134 for doubles. Tricky opponent looking at the stats. But this surface would appear to suit Katie!
Hard luck Sarah and Mel - but we have to buck this trend of failing to qualify for events overseas.
Anne Keathavong faces American Lindsay Lee-Waters. The pdf file says shes ranked 941 but thats impossible so I'll check her out on wta tour in a minute.
Possible r2 tie with 5th seed Serra Zanetti. But only 17 ranking places between 5th seed and Anne. She was 8 ranking positions away from being seeded herself.
Doubles - They are all playing with foreigners again. Probably in order to make the cut.
Borwell plays with Chanelle Scheepers of South aFrica
Keathavong plays with Su Wei Hseih of Taipei
O'Brien plays with Margit Ruutel of Estonia. They qualified, which is nice.
Apparently that is her ranking. Well near enough. I don't know how she made this main draw as she's not listed as a WC or a q or a LL. Maybe she's had an injury and she has a protected ranking.
