Last week Andy's 18th result was 21 from reaching the quarters at Mons. The 120 for the washington final replaced this, leaving 40 (from the quarters at Nottingham) as his 18th score. The 50 Binghampton points (which come off this week anyway) are currently in the 17th position. Does that clear things up or still not make sense?
The 'other countable tournaments' (all those not compulsory, so not Masters or Grand Slams) are very respectable scores, as shown by his having an 18th score of 40. However, the masters are less impressive. This means that in most ATP tournaments until this time next year at least Andy will have get beyond the quarters to gain any points, however, come the masters events he will be able to pile on the points by getting beyond round 1.

The good news is that Andy cant be immediately (i.e. not in the next round) displaced by anyone below him other than Ferrero. Other than JC the others would have to get round three at least to overtake.
.........but things still looking ominous, with seven on that table into the second round.
The pessimists' post is as follows:
Worst case for Andy is now a drop of 6 if he goes out to Tim. This would put him down to 35th again. 12 can overtake, all the way down to Tim & Sanguinetti.
If he beats Tim, he gains two places, and could then lose a maximum of four, meaning a drop to 31, where he started the week. 10 can overtake.
If he makes the quarters (past Moya or Gremelmayer), he gains four places, and could then lose a maximum of four, meaning no move from his current 29th. 10 can overtake (from Tursunov to Benneteau).
If he makes the semis (past Niemenem?), he gains 9 places, and could then lose a maximum of five, meaning a gain of 4 to 25th. 12 can overtake (from Hrbaty to Gasquet).
If he makes the finals (Nadal?), he gains 11 places, and could then lose a max of 2, meaning a gain of 9 to 20th. 7 can overtake (Hrbaty to Johansson).
If he wins (Fed?), he gains 12 places, and could then lose a max of 2, meaning a gain of 10 to 19th. 2 can overtake (Haas & Hrbaty)
