Hi, does anyone know where i could find the current team positions within the Europe/Africa Zone Group I. the daviscup.com site only appears to list the teams in our zone alphabetically, and only gives overall world rankings. unless i have missed something on their site? cheers, Andy.
What happens is that the winner of the GB v Ukraine tie will remain in Euro-African zone 1 and will be drawn against one of Belgium, Czech Republic, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Serbia and Montenegro, Morrocco or Portugal.
The loser will go down into group two.
Whoever GB will be drawn against, that team will have been drawn at random. I don't think there are any standings as such.
There is Davis Cup rankings btw and of course the team with the higher ranking is the seeded team of the tie. So to the best of my knowledge the closest thing you will get to standings will the overall world rankings.
Plus we might not get Serbia again as they might beat the Swiss in the World Group playoff. Which is doubtful though.

That's what the press and pundits all believe. As in order to play any further ATPs this season Greg will have to go through qualifying and they can't see him doing that with his injuries clocking up and a young family. Greg won't even be close to making the qualifying cut for the masters series events.
but i thought they had standings like football, so although they arnt used too much they are still there.
lets hope we dont get serbia to be honest an away trip there wont be fun.
I wouldn't be particularly confident of our chances of beating serbia or the czech republic especially without Boggo. I can't see us beating Belgium either, with the two Rochus brothers, Malisse and Vliegen. However, I reckon we could beat Italy, Israel, Luxembourg, Morroco or Portugal.
Ukraine have announced their squad: Sergiy STAKHOVSKY Orest TERESHCHUK Aleksandr DOLGOPOLOV Sergei BUBKA
So here are the likely pairings: A Murray v O Tereshchuk/A Dolgopolov J Baker v S Stakhovsky Murray/Rusedski v Stakhovsky/Tereschuck A Murray v S Stakhovsky J Baker v O Tereshchuk/A Dolgopolov
Some more info on the Ukraine players:
Sergiy Stakhovsky is ranked 184 with a career high of 173 reached earlier this year. He's had an ok year, reaching 2 challenger semis but has done nothing else. He's been beaten by Boggo and Martin Lee [on grass in straights]. He had an average junior career up until the 2004 US Open when he stormed through the draw to reach the final. Burst onto the scene in early 2005 by qualifying for ATP Milan and reaching the quarters, upsetting Mario Ancic. Since then he's reached a few challenger semis but his ranking his plateaued out. He's play 1 DC tie before, losing all 3 rubbers to Belgium [Vliegen and Elseneer beat him].
Orest Tereshchuk is the most experienced of the Ukraine players. He's ranked 349 with a career high of 240 reached in 2002. He's been in good form in Eastern Europe in the last month, reaching two challengers quarters and a semi on the hard courts. Tereshchuk's biggest threat will come in doubles, he's ranked 140 with a career high of 108 reached in August. He's reached 5 challenger doubles finals this year, winning two. He's the most experienced player in the Ukraine squad having played 29 DC rubbers, with a 19-10 win-loss record.
The singles rubber on day 1 against Andy Murray will be played by either Tereshchuk or 17 year old Alexander Dolgopolov, Ukraine's next great hope. Dolgopolov doesn't turn 18 until November and is already ranked 375. This year he's won 5 futures events, all on clay and 2 in the Ukraine. He qualified for ATP Bucharest this week before losing to Christophe Rochus in rd1. This will be his first DC tie.
Sergei Bubka is unlikely to play any part in the tie apart from in the dead rubbers. He's 19 and is ranked 458. He reached a high of no 4 in the juniors in 2005. Apart from 1 challenger quarter-final he's had an ordinary year. He's been beaten by Alex Slabinsky, Martin Lee, Josh Goodall and Colin Fleming but he's also beaten Goodall, Smith, Bamford and Lownsbrough.
"Mackin's success in a Challenger event in France this week meant his schedule was too tight to join up with the team for the vital clash"
Is it just me who finds it a little bizarre that Mackin is effectively being punished for doing well this week, there is still a whole week to get used to the clay and I thought he was going out there today? Surely we want on-form players in the team (I don't mean to take away from Delgado by saying that)?
