Spain F25

Qualifying:

The usual suspects are in action here. James Ward is seeded 8th and he and Oscar Podlewski are our best hopes. Robert Dee, perhaps mistakenly decided against sampling the delights of Senegal this week and he's also in action here.

Rd1:

R Dee [GB] v I Vicente-Fibla [Esp][14][wr:1429]

J Rambotas [GB] v I Ogarkov [Rus]

A Hutchings [GB] v A Sanchez Thami [Esp]

J Ward [GB][8] v R Puerto [Esp]

Oscar Podlewski withdrew before the round started

Hi Jezza, welcome to the site. I'm one of the guys sharing the username Bogofan from BTZ

Excellent series of wins for James Ward justifying his seeding. Today he beat Sanchez-Gil 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 which was a good win as Sanchez-Gil came close to qualifying last week and there's only a couple of points between them in the rankings.

Rd1:

J Ward [GB] [world ranking: 1234] v G Olaso [Esp] [world ranking: 914]

M Phillips [GB][3] [world ranking: 601] v M Palecios [Esp] [unranked]

Definately a winnable match for James, his opponent is 18 and has been mostly working his way through futures qualies aswell. Last week he lost in rd2 of Spain F24. His best result came in April in the Turkey satellite on clay when he reached the final of the masters [week 4].

Morgan has a good opportunity for a good run here, unranked wildcard in rd1 and then a player either ranked 979 or 1543 in rd2.

Morgan beat Marcelo Palecios 6-1, 6-1 yesterday

James plays his rd1 match today.

In rd2 Morgan plays Spain's David Estruch [wr: 1551]. Estruch beat Sergio Perez [wr: 979] 6-3, 6-2 in rd1. The 20 year old has been given a special exemption entry into this tournament as last week he qualified for Spain F24 and went on to reach the semis. Morgan's played him once before, winning 6-1, 7-5 in Spain F3 in early 2005.

Rd2: M Phillips [GB][3] bt D Estruch [Esp] 7-6[5], 6-1

This win will push Morgan up to a career high ranking inside the top 600 of approx 593. Congrats to him

QF: M Phillips [GB][3] v G Nicau [Por][7]

Morgan has a great opportunity to make what is already a very good week into an excellent one. Nicau is ranked 688, he's had two fairly straightforward wins, dropping no more than 5 games in either of them. The 2nd seed also went out today to a player ranked 1068, as he had to retire through injury so the winner of this quarter-final will be hot favourite to make the final.

QF: M Phillips [GB][3] lost to G Nicau [Por][7] 6-0, 0-6, 4-6

is all I can say about this really ! What a weird scoreline.

A consolation for Morgan is that in a couple of Mondays time he'll be up to a career high inside the top 600
