That procedure is just for Grand Slams.
The reason that Jamie didn't get the lucky loser spot was that he was so disgusted with himself for losing in qualies he forgot to sign-up in time for it. This meant that if one more person withdrew, Colin Fleming would get in. I sent a team of highly trained martial arts experts to Vancouver with the aim of crippling another player in the main draw but sadly they failed
Colin's qualies loss was to be expected, he only arrived in Vancouver at 4am on Saturday and on Sunday he was still getting over the jetlag. Chramosta reached the Granby quarters last week, beating Cecil Mamiit [wr: 200ish] in rd1 so Colin would have needed to be on top form to win.
I have no idea what happened to Jamie, his opponent was ranked 1051 [he's been ranked 337 but that was back in 2002]. I thought he would cruise it in straights. That's his worst loss since last October when he lost to unranked Brit Simon Harston in the Jersey semis.
thats embarassing, losing to the guy who sung walking in the air
That's the 4th time Jones has beaten Bloomfield and all his wins have been in straight sets. The first 3 came in GB futures in 2001 and 2002 when Jones was ranked a lot higher so I hoped that now their rankings are more similar, Richard would be able to gain some revenge. He's really been struggling for form on the slower hard courts.
Jones is ranked 232 and since making the quarters of the Tunica challenger at the beginning of May, he's barely won a match
British hopes in Vancouver this year now just remain with Fleming and Murray in the doubles:
Rd1: Y Lu [Chinese Taipei] [3] bt M Lee [GB] 7-6[5], 6-0
I wonder happened to Martin in set 2 after such a close 1st set ? This is quite a disappointing result as although Lu is ranked 137, he'd lost his last 5 matches.
Colin and Jamie are on court at the moment I think. They were going to have to face Heuberger and Mamiit which would have been a really tough match as Mamiit is a classy doubles player and Heuberger is a great volleyer. However, those guys have pulled out [because they're both out of the singles] and so they've got Czech lucky losers instead. Should be a straightforward win and a good warm-up for the likely quarter-final clash with the no 1 seeds
At last a win for the Brits in Vancouver - Colin Fleming and 'Jaime' Baker won 7-6(4) 6-2 in first round doubles. The Vancouver site is at last providing results soon after the matches have been completed.
Shame about that result but at least it was very close, only a few points in it. Colin said that in their rd1 match it took some time getting used to each other's style again, maybe that was the difference between the pairs today. Butorac has been in form as we know but Parrott hadn't won a doubles match since May before this tournament.
Colin and Jamie now head to Binghampton where they will play the singles qualies starting on Sat.
Hopefully Martin and Harel can restore some British pride in Vancouver in the next couple of days, this tournament really has been a miserable one given how many Brits have been competing in it.
They're the 4th seeds and play Chris Drake and Alun Jones next. They should win this one.
Jamie Baker must really be kicking himself, the player who took his lucky loser place [American Eric Taino] reached rd2 and if Jamie had done that he would have defended his points from last year. As it is, he'll slip to about 305.
