DC Fallout

Will there be any fall out from this tie?

i think alex will be dropped, whilst i am probably the biggest boggo fan here, its obvious to see that the DC isnt right for him, part of the problem is he is so quiet on court that the crowd dont get behind him, he needs to learn how to show his emotion, the way he always keeps it inside just makes it looks like he doesnt care and backs up the commonly held view that he hasnt got the commitment. I think he will be in the team again, but he needs to have the self confidence, and i think he will need to be in the top 100 to get that. perhaps in restrospect playing him againnst okun wasnt  such a smart move, it was only his 3rd  live match tie, and to compound it okun came out playing really well. Also if he picked up the injury he should have called the trainer so at least the crowd etc sould see.

serious questions have to be asked about bates ability i think too, both andy and alex came out playing so flat it was painfull, then in both the doubles and jamie's singles match we lost from winning positions in the 5th. i know at the end of the days its the players but our record under bates is pretty bad and at some point he must be held accountable.

so the tie vs ukraine...

alex wont be in it unless he has a mricalous uso, will andy want to be in it? i think he will but it may cost him points wise (although last year as we know he had blinder in tieland after the clay, can he do it again?) Alan will be in the team as our residenmt clay court specilaist :), i guess auckland for the doubles, do we have any idea how he will play under dc pressure and how's he on clay? Then probably Jamie Delgado as a useful back up. I am not sure if greg should be, maybe its time to make that switch, it may drop us temporaily down but its better to build up from the bottom.

The only comment I have is that watching Bates talking to Alex at the changeovers just looked all wrong. i got the impression that all Alex wanted was a couple of minutes of quiet to get his thoughts together so that he could address the next game. Instead there was this constant chat into his right ear. Hopefully I'm wrong, and Bates' input was what Alex wanted and needed at that point, but from Boggo's body language (and Bates' - who looked as if he felt he was being ignored), I'm not sure.

Sometimes, the best way to coach someone is to know when to shut up.

Has it been confirmed the tie will be played on clay, unless its indoor clay.

no its not confirmed as far as i am aware but normally teams opt for it against us i dont really know if you can have indoor clay, but i cant see why not, their best player stahkovskiy (wr 181) is he good on clay? i think he tends to play better on hard courts so myabe they go for a high bouncy hard court as clay may backfire on them.

their top top singles are also their 2 top doubles so could be a 2 man team for them so clay might not be wise for them if thay have to play 3 rubbers each. boggo has played doubles with sthak a few times i think.

Read Lloyd's comments. got to say i think he has overstepped the mark! I don't think he undertands how the modern game actually works! Ok though Andy is way above all the Brits doesnt mean all the other young players has to follow the same route as him. Andy progressed differently to others, he got wildcards when he needed them and played a few challengers. Players such as Baker and Goodall are coming along at a steady pace, they play challengers and futures here and there so it going to take time to get some Brits in the top 100 in order to create a good DC team.

Personally, Delgado worked he socks off and tried his best, for bates, what else can you do besides being positive than negative. He said that GB are at a low after the defeat by Israel, why don't to try to be andy's age and play tennis and see what the game is like today instead of talking F**K ALL!! [apologies]

Shame really! Well at least he was always positive! A Davis Cup coach needs patience and commitment which Bates had. I don't know whether encouragement would be an issue, because its the players who are doing the job for their country not the captain!

Hmmm.... who's next, though Lloyd would not be the ideal captain because he always negative i think if Henman or Greg do not have a good hardcourt season, then i think it will be one of them. But then who else can do it, are you able to appoint a foreign captain?

to point out alex has now missed both uk grass court challengers for this dc tie, 2 tournamnets where he would have been seeded 1 and could have really pushed him close to the top 100. yes he played bad, but it still shows some commitment on his part.

I'm am not sure what is behind Bates' decision to quit. who would like to stand up and say they could have done a better job than him at this tie?  Perhaps this has been planned for a while, all part of Roger Draper's changes.  We are not going to start winning until we get some better players, who is captain is only a very small part of the equation.  There is talk of John Lloyd becoming captain, is he perhaps too old to hit it off with our guys?  I think either Tim or Greg would be great captains, but I'm sure Tim doesn't want the job, and Greg probably wants to concentrate on his own matches if he is going to continue his involvement with the DC.

Does anybody have any idea how much a DC captain gets paid?   And what would the job spec. be?

Don't ask me where I heard this but I seem to remember Tim saying in an interview that he would love to be Davis Cup Captain but not whilst he was still playing and not whilst others who played with him were still playing so not really for a few years at least.

I don't like that article by Lloyd. Whilst I wouldn't say he knows nothing at all about the moden game but he certainly doesn't follow tennis much beyond the slams, and definitely not at challenger level so quite how he can comment on the propects of our players, Boggo in particular is beyond me.

I will be interested to see who they appoint, I think Greg would make a good captain (Tim too but probably not just yet) as he has worked with the younger players for years and has their respect. I think he should stop playing Davis Cup himself but become the captain even though he's still playing.

bit out of time here as its from sunday buts heres some quotes from alex's coach mike, who also works with mackin and delgado now.

(link to the full article http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2094-2281570,00.html

However, Mike Raphael, the coach who came to Bogdanovic’s aid when he was shown the door by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) but is now so revered by the rank-and-file British players that he is also mentor to Mackin and Delgado, begged to differ. Clearly Raphael would have a vested interest in any of his three players being picked, but he was insistent that Bogdanovic should be given the nod.

Bogdanovic insisted there were positives to come out of Friday’s defeat. He maintained that his performance was far improved on his effort in Israel. Raphael agreed: “It was a little bit of a breakthrough. Yes, it’s not the standard we are used to seeing from him in tournaments, but the key is acknowledge there has been some development in his game at Davis Cup.

“He is facing these demons, but is strong enough to overcome these problems. Alex needs to put himself on the line. The more he faces these sort of issues, the better he will become at beating them. Let’s be honest, there is a fear of playing Davis Cup, but you cannot run away from this sort of thing. You have to face up.”

Two years ago it was Bates, along with former director of performance David Felgate and Mark Petchey, then manager of Men’s National Tennis, who told Bogdanovic his commitment was so unsatisfactory that funding was being withdrawn by the LTA.

Last year it was Bates who was forced to commiserate with Bogdanovic after the most disappointing of displays saw the Serbian-born left-hander lose to Okun in three emphatic sets. Just a few months ago Bates listened again as Bogdanovic spelt out the reasons why he felt mentally unable to figure in the British team that hosted Serbia & Montenegro in Glasgow.

Bates has opted to include players’ personal coaches in the Davis Cup set-up, so Raphael and his colleague Aubrey Barrett have been integral to the preparations since Bogdanovic returned from reaching the quarter-finals of last week’s Hall of Fame tournament in Newport, Rhode Island. Ultimately the captain will make the decision, but Raphael urged him: “Alex wants to play the fifth rubber. I had a conversation with him before the tie and he told me if he had the choice he would much prefer to play a decisive fifth rubber than a first. If he is fit, there just is not an issue of Alex not wanting to play. He is very up for the task.”

'The experience could harden them into good Davis Cup performers. It could take two or three years and a few defeats for it to happen, but it would be worth it.'

just re-read lloyds comments and to be honest its rubbish, that statment there kinda sums it up, he slates alex for not being up to it but what about this 2/3 years he would be prepared to give players like goodall and baker. they way tennis works is that you wont be given that. he says loses against isreal is an all time low, but then talks about re building and accepting a few defeats. ireally hope that he doesnt get it, i cant see the players working with him. i thinl andy m will be insturmntal in chosing the next coach

bit out of the blue but what about mike rapheal?? he has got alex playing better and also is workling with alan & jamie. a total unkown in some respects, but there is no reason why the captin has to be a 'name' as such, and being dc captin is surely mostly about motivation now.

Some players just don't handle the Davis Cup environment well. I would say Boggo is one of those, and I think Andy has real problems handling it as well if I'm honest - it's a different pressure and when you are just playing for yourself then at the end of the day you know the only one who suffers is you if you lose a match. In team tennis you're representing your country and if you have a bad day it's your team that suffers. I've seen people criticising Andy's body-language in the tie when he was sitting on the bench - I mean that's pressure knowing that if you sit a certain way, or have a particular look on your face that you're going to get criticised for being 'selfish' or 'self-centered' despite the fact he was cheering on his teammates.

It's a no win situation for these guys. They give up tournaments and points to represent their country and if they win then it's 'fine, you should have won anyway' and if they get beat it's 'get the knives out'. I don't know why they would want to do it to be honest. I love watching the Davis Cup, but I would hate to play in it.

If we're going to do anything in the Davis Cup we need Alex to start performing. Maybe we need to ease him in a bit - instead of playing him on the first day we shove him into the doubles to get his confidence up and then he can play dead rubbers and then, hopefully after a couple of ties, he will be able to perform better when Greg eventually retires.

John Lloyd's comments about accepting defeats and needing 2 or 3 years is great because it means he doesn't need to deliver results. I honestly think the next DC captain should be someone with a more recent history of coaching and shouldn't be someone who has basically said our number 4 player, who is rising into the top 100 won't have a place in the team.
