It is a great result for Josh, I dont know how he managed to go into Wimbledon with his ranking languishing at 400 ish - I saw Josh best Scoville Jenkins in final round qualifying at Roehampton and was very impressed. I hope he'll be able to continue his good form on the hard courts, but there is still plenty of points to play for on the grass - lets hop he canmake hay while the sun shines!
Josh won the qualifying tournament thats how he got direct entry into SW19.
Guccione's last match was against a Croatian, so it looks like they both held serve before Chris prevailed through the tiebreakers! so its going to be tough for Josh because of Guccione's serve but hopefully his variety of shots will help him as Guccione one dimensional!
Guccione's recent form has not exactly been stellar, most recently goin dwon to Alan Mackin in the second round in Dublin in two close sets. Prior to that, he lost in the first round of Surbiton and then the first round of Wimbledon qualies, so his serve can't be that invincible! Josh must know he has a very good chance of winning and getting to his first (I think?!) challenger final. The only thing that concerns me slightly is that he has lost the first set of all of his matches this week. Lets hope that Josh steps up to the plate and shows what he can do.
His ranking should jump nicely on Monday, when he'll have his 18 points from felixtowe added on at the same time as his 22 (hopefully more!) from this week. Currently 368, he should jump to around 290, and will be within a whisker of overtaking Jamie Baker .
Josh has equaled his career best performance, reaching the semi finalls of the Bolton Challenger in 2004, but he is in the best form of his life so there every chance he can make his first final tomorrow.
Worst case senario he will add 40 points to the 85 he has to make 125 which would actually put him dead level with Jamie Baker (assuming my calculations are correct ).
Including GB F9 he has won 9 matches in a row, the last 8 have been 3 setters, and in 6 of those matches he lost the first set. Infact Josh has lost the first set in every match he has played this week but he has dug deep, fought hard, and believed in himself and he will be rewarded with a massive jump in his ranking.
Currently he is 368th with 85 points.
He is now guarenteed 138 points which would lift him to approximately 268th.
A win tomorrow would add another 15 and Josh would break the top 250 for the first time.
