Now that Alex Bogdanovic has made the main draw and Andy has made second seed (first seed if Baghdatis pulls out as expected), how many of the other Brits will go over for qualies???
Last year there was NO cut for a 32 person qualies list. This is almost unheard of. And even if the cut is quite high this year the likes of Parmar, Bloomfield (if he loses today), Lee and Baker would most likely make it. And as someone said elsewhere on the site, Delgado might be awarded a wild card for qualies if he asks?!?
The only other option for these players this week would be to compete in the 15k grass court event at Felixstowe as ALL the challenger events this week are on clay (which seems like really bad planning from the ATP).
And with such a weak singles field, this would be the ideal opportunity for the likes of Auckland, Fleming and J Murray to compete (and hopefully do well) in an ATP level doubles event (and maybe, if they are lucky, squeeze into singles qualies).
Best of luck to Boggo, hope he gets a good draw. You never know if he gets on a run there might be a repeat of the Martin Lee - 2001 showing. Boggo will love the courts, they'll suit him perfectly - very traditional grass - fast and low bouncing. Opponents will find his serve tricky.
Jamie M told me today that he's playing doubs with Andy in Newport next week. Colin is playing in Poland - the Poznan challenger, definately singles qualies and almost certainly doubs but I don't know who with - maybe Alex Satschko, a German guy who Col knows well. They're not playing together for a while now after Dublin for reasons which I'm not allowed to tell ! Colin has a new coach, Canadian Louis Cayer who coached the 2000 Olympic doubles gold medallists [there's quite a bit of info on this on Colin's website if you have a rummage through the articles: www.freewebs.com/colinflemingonline]. Louis reckons that Colin will be a top 20 doubles player possibly top 10 with the right partner and he should know having coached Slam winners and Olympic gold medallists !!!
I reckon Jamie Baker may enter Newport qualies, he's playing a string of hard-court challengers in the USA throughout July and August - Aptos, Lexington, Vancouver, Binghampton, Bronx. He's hoping it will result in a high enough ranking to enter US Open qualies. As he's going to be in the States, it would make sense to enter Newport.
Auckland is also going to be playing qualies and doubles main draw - don't know who doubles will be with.
Only James Auckland decided to go for singles qualies in the end.
Qual Round 1:
James Auckland (Gbr) vs Alex Kuznetsov (USA)
If he wins he is likely to face the second seed Benjamin Becker of Germany who plays wc Huntly Montgomery in round 1. If he gets as far as round 3 he should have an easier time of it with the seeded player being Michael Russell (USA).
The cut fell at wr 1029 this year which is still ludicrously low for an ATP event. There are some Futures that aren't too different from that.
the points from last years nottingham ch drop of this week, which will drop alex out of the top 150. hope he gets a nice draw here to salvage something.
little bit dissapointed that not more brits travlled over, but its not that often that many do try for atp quailes anyway.
