Alex and Andy Act - DC

BOGDANOVIC HAS BIG PLANS FOR NEW BREED

By Ian Laybourn, PA Sport

British number four Alex Bogdanovic wants to turn Britain's Davis Cup campaign from the Tim and Greg show into the Alex and Andy act.

The 22-year-old left-hander was left out of the British side that lost to Serbia and Montenegro earlier this year after admitting he was not in the right frame of mind.

Belgrade-born Bogdanovic was still suffering mental anguish from his straight-sets defeat by Israel's Noam Okun in the second rubber of the Europe/Africa zone match in Ramat Hasharon last year.

But he insists he is ready to give his all for Britain if called on for next month's rematch with Israel at Eastbourne.

With Tim Henman retired from Davis Cup and Greg Rusedski and Andy Murray far from certain to play at Eastbourne, Britain's captain Jeremy Bates may be forced to turn to Bogdanovic, who says he would be happy to answer the call.

"I'd like to play," he said. "If Greg and Andy are playing, I might not get to play but, if Greg doesn't play, I'd definitely love to.

"I love playing Davis Cup and I love being in the team.

"It can break you at times but I've got to keep getting better and stronger.

"I think Andy and I can do well in the Davis Cup."

Bogdanovic made an impressive Davis Cup debut against Australia in Melbourne three years ago when he lost to Lleyton Hewitt but beat Todd Woodbridge.

Hailed as the successor to Henman when he burst onto the scene as an 18-year-old, Bogdanovic drifted out of the picture amid suggestions that he lacked commitment.

But he has risen to a new high of 135 in the world rankings and pushed second seed Rafael Nadal all the way in their first-round match at Wimbledon.

Bogdanovic, who lost 6-4 7-6 6-4 to the brilliant Spaniard, will play in the Hall of Fame Championships in Newport, Rhode Island, for the first time in the week after Wimbledon but will be available for the Davis Cup tie, which runs from July 21-23.

i also read another article where alex hits back at bates saying he was always avaliable for the DC tie in April if he was called upon.

I think he said something along the lines was that if the captin felt he was ready then he would have been ready to play. but i can remember where i saw it.

with greg confirming he will miss the tie its a good chnace for alex to have a good tie and show what he can do. He has a bit of press recently and has made it quite well known he wants to play so i think it will be hard for Bates overlook him.

Whilst he hasnt won a single competitive grass match for almost 12 months, his performances looked to have been very good this year so he should be able to win at least 1 singles and have a good chance of winning both.

I think its getting obvious that greg is going to struggle more and more and the dc is generlly regarded as quite draining so Al needs to be given his chances becase realisitcly i think for the next year or 2 he will most likely be our 2nd singles player.

I read an article in the Times with Boggo where he came across as a bit of a fragile little flower who got so upset because he got criticised after the Isreal match. Hopefully he's got that out of his system now though because I think he could be a very good player for us in the DC ties in the future.
