Boys & Girls: J30 Liverpool indoor hard (Week 44)

Qualifying starts tomorrow. Quite a strong line up, but the following week's J60 is very strong.

There is also a TE taking place at the same venue, although qualifying is at the Wirral Tennis Centre

I'll be down for a few days as normal this week abd next week.
I've seen most of the girls either at juniors or TE before bare Rose Clifton.
The boys is different and i've only seen a few of these.

The TE - i have no ideas who to look out for.

It was a shame that the girls' qualis draw was so skinny - I always find it disappointing that so few girls give it a go, especially compared with the boys

But qualis is now done and points of note:

GIRLS

Top 4 seeds: Pui Yin Lung, Rose Clifton, Lucy Bear, Nishta kesavan

wildcards: Sophia Florence, Sienna Grace, Coco Witton, NOR

Qualifiers: Tess Beard, Ingrid Dumitru, EST, Aadya Iyer

Several interesting players born 2012 - Coco is 2013

wildcards: Dominic Czopek, Maxim Sokol, Joseph knightley, NOR

qualifiers: Nicholas Morrell, kamran Arif, Ben Coxon, Samuel Mhizha

This is quite a weak J30 for Liverpool on both the boys and girls side.
Lots of youngsters on the boys and it is tough to keep up with the older boys, who hit harder.
Brandon R and Alex Winder look miles ahead of the rest of the boys.
Denzill Darkey is an interesting story...

Paulisi, you said it was a strong line up in the original post
And now it's quite weak

Which are you going for ?

There is definitely not the depth of previous years and some big mismatches.

By far and away the best tennis of the day is Coco Witton v Katie Randall. A belter of a match so far.

3h 40 mins later - Katie wins in 3 tie breaks. Fantastic match.

Both players to follow.

Another who impressed was Niamah Grant who really pushed Millie Ryder.

Sienna Grace took out one of the Canadians  and was really solid.

The LTA, with their usual wisdom, also scheduled the 16U and 18U nationals grade 2 over the weekend (they had the whole week to do it.) A lot of the players would have usually played qualifying in a home J30  (girls especially) but had to choose between the 2. It is also a week of mock GCSEs and A levels for a lot of schools. Katie Randall won the 18s and Alice Moffat the 16s. Not sure about the boys

Few thoughts:
Boys - lots of youngsters, but the likes of Alex Winder and Brandon will totally out power them.
Kamrin Arif match between the two 15 year olds was really tight, but Kamrin's defensive skills were the deciding factor.
Ryan Szeto was a lucky boy to come through in 3 after being 4-2 down in the final set.
I watched a bit of Nathan McGarvey's match, but it wasnt the best quality match.
Dominik Czopek is a bit of a character
Denzell Darkey got most of his points in Ghana, but despite his lack of size, he played well.(his dad was a professional, so no pressure...)

Jo Kinghtley had a good go in the second set, but the age gap told.

Girls
Pui Yin Lung was embarrasingly one sided as was Alisa Nedyalkova
All the Canadians lost, with Lucie Ahl helping on the coaching
Rose Clifton knew she would be in for a long match before she started and it turned out that way. Eisha kept the ball in court and frustrated Rose into errors.
The young guns did really well. I wasnt suprised as i've seen them at TE - Coco Witton, Sienna Grace, Ingrid Dumitru

I tend to agree. Her movement is so good and she can play attacking tennis when she wants.

It sorted reminded me of Emma Raducanu at that age

Tx for all the feedback, paulisi - much appreciated, as usual

The problem with the boys is that Alex and Brandon (and several others) are all 17 and 18 and really should outpower a J30, by definition - it's good there's a group of them (6 out of the 16 left are age 17 or 18) but it's not really a J30 age, the difference in physique will often be more important than the difference in tennis level

The girls is more interesting

Coco Witton lost in R1 of nationals

But I think she was year 1, which can make a big difference

And I noted earlier that she's just been accepted as a Tennis First Grantee

Some of the other youngsters have good qualities too

NB A slight shame, maybe, that the ITF are pushing so hard for the new format, and nearly all the other events have switched over, but Liverpool is still using the old format - there are good reasons for the new format, it's proving popular, and not difficult to implement - strange that they didn't try it
