Week 44 WTA250 - Hong Kong - Hard

Oh dear, threw away a double break with lots of DFs and UEs

Yeah that was an absolute flop. Classic case of the finish line ahead and stopping doing everything that got you into that position in the first place.

Shame - she was doing very very well.

Settles down and good tennis to *4-1 and another double break but here we go again. Broken on a double.

4-2*

Just freezing her arm up once she's in control. Needs to focus on some routines or basic messages to ground herself point to point I think.

Clings on for 5-3* with a couple of shots clipping the tape, miss hit that lands on the baseline and a double fault. Then makes a couple of wild errors to relieve some pressure on Kenin. Has to serve for it.

*5-4

Amazing! Couple of points in that final game she didn't quite back herself and lost them, but when she went after it she really looked classy. That forehand whipped crosscourt to win it was gorgeous.

Chuffed for her. Well done kid!

She came through, but the nerves really kicked in.
First main draw win on WTA tour

Just to point out that Mika's singles ranking is currently 411 - 276 is her doubles ranking.

Oh, brilliant to wake up to, not even thinking she'd have a play, let alone produce that!

In the moving chairs in and out of the GB top 10, Mika for now is back in, showing as live ranked 351, usurping Sofia's live take over ( from Naiktha ) after less than 24 hours. Hopefully she really does have her mo-jo back and keeps on rising in the coming months. She's going to go so much higher, talent was always likely to win out in time again but this is still so good to see.

 Tx for that, paulisi

And to the commentary, PaulM

Super win for Mika - who, as the addict says, is outside the top-400 at the moment - miles off

Now back to WR 350 or so in live rankings

But more important just to close out a match like that, and get a big one on the sheet

Have amended the WR for Mika as per the above comment from the addict.

Isn't this Mika's first win in the  main draw on  the WTA tour?

Missed this being commented on above

I think Mika has now well and truly justified her trip to Asia as opposed to North Wales

Did not see that win coming, wonderful to see Mika with some confidence again
