I am wondering if the low-intensity tennis that is sufficient for Katie to deploy to win matches against very low-ranked players helps or hinders her in preparation for playing better players in a stronger field

These matches aren't low-intensity B00thy, today's match against Wan was a really tough test, in the balance right to the end of 3 keenly fought sets. Don't forget that Swan has been out for several weeks through injury. Each of the matches Swan has played in this tournament could easily have been lost for a player needing match practice. Today's opponent, I Wen Wan, is not far off the same class as Mia Pohankova who Swan played a month ago in the Porto 125 QF. Swan came so close to winning that particular ding-dong match in two sets before her back seized up. Look at how Pohankova is breezing through the field in Tokyo right now.

My comment was before this match. I agree with your sentiments about this latest match which was between a player looking to find some form, and a player working has hard as she could to get as much out of it as she could, hence the relative difference in demeanour between the two players.

Katie has obviously had her serious injury problems and she's obviously happy to take part in these lower level competitions, pick up some straightforward wins, on the whole, and pocket the points and importantly enjoy playing tennis again. I do tend to agree with you however, in regards to preparation to take on better players.  Maybe if she had been playing more matches at a higher level she would have beaten Pohankova for eg.  But, I guess at Katie's stage of her career it doesn't matter too much.

I'm sorry, but I really don't buy this reasoning at all. You have a player, Swan who was practically finished with tennis just 18 months ago, and through monumental effort now has new hope to continue her career, and is giving her all to rise up once again through the tennis rankings. There is no way that Swan is simply farming easy ranking points, and you can bet it absolutely matters to her that she progresses and develops as a tennis player. Injury allowing, she is down to play Incheon 100 next week, and a W75 in Aussie soon after and that will be a very tough tournament too. Being out action for this last month was a significant setback, and she needed this tournament to gain match fitness, as any other player in the same situation would. Too many people on this forum are quick to knock our best players.

To be fair to Katie, after this tournament there are 3 straight W75s in Australia and she's also on the entry list for a W100 in Korea. Like last year she looks set to spend our winter in Australia with Alex so her schedule isn't particularly surprising, she's not going to travel around lots for WTA125s like others even though her ranking would get her in to them

Swan also was out only woman who won a match at Wimbledon! I think she's doing just fine... I am sure if she stays healthy she will up the level next season and rightly so imo to take it slow and not rush it!

Sorry foobarbaz for repeating what you said about Katie's next tournaments, Katie appears to want to be based in Aus for these months and this tournament makes perfect sense as prep for the bigger ITFs as you say

No worries sammmm, you're right that Australia is a good fit for Swan and her team, fingers crossed keeping her match fit for Aussie Open qualies in the new year.

As an indicator of how Katie's game is improving, did anyone see the beautiful topspin lob that Swan played in today's match as Wan came to the net?

Interesting to read the debates on here re-Katie Swan.

She had such a successful end of season in 2025, picking up numerous points from the Aussie tournaments that it is not surprsing to me that she is back here - but a little sad that her season so far has flatlined a bit; injuries again playing their part.

Last year she was very successful across Australia until she went to tropical and humid Darwin and so my personal hope is that she doesn't go back there again, and plays in the more normal sunny and hot (but not tropical and excessively humid) conditions that exist in the rest of Australia.

Anyway it will be interesting to see how she does and whether she can replicate the success of last year - I think starting at a low level after some time off due to injury is much more sensible than entering a higher level tournament and lacking match practice, then being knocked out in the first couple of rounds - these matches should get her match fit and match sharp for tougher tasks ahead.

She has just started her semi by the way, for anyone interested in watching.
