Weeks 41 - WTA1000 - Wuhan, China - Hard

Who is on her team? She has achieved an incredible return following injury. Who ever is advising her is world class. Jack and Emma take note.

I was wondering that.....I heard his voice several times yesterday but that didn't help me at all

I'm assuming it's still Ben Reeves, as I haven't seen anything to suggest she's changed (although I might have missed it)

But she's been with him (and Julie) for ages now and he's always seemed a really good guy, she trusts him, he knows what he's doing

Apparently, Ben, Julie (Hobbs/Pullin) and Martin Reeves (Ben's brother?) are all part of something called Pav and Ave Tennis based out of Hove, at the Pavilion and Avenue Tennis Club?

I believe Alicia Dudeney went to the same club

Yes, I think Alicia's mum told me that at Roehampton earlier this year.

Have played there many times. Nice place but just an ordinary club so pretty remarkable effort.

With Ben confirmed by Lambda, it shows that it's not anyone new, not some new magic fairy dust biggrin

Just doing the good ol' stuff

The main thing to me is that Sonay looks so fresh and up for it - as you'd expect from someone who's been out for a while - a lot of the women there seem a bit tired, jaded - again, as you'd expect from the end of a hard season

Errani and Paolini won their QF and move above Liv and Tereza to 9th in the race.

It looks as if we could have three ladies back in the top 100 next week. In the live rankings Katie is down 4 to 58, Fran up 5 to 99 and Sonay up 83 to 87 with a chance to go higher.

Liv and Tereza would be over 600 poimts behind 9th place if Errani & Paolini go on to win the title.

Of course 9th is effectively 8th re qualifying for the WTA Finals with Aleksandra Krunic out. Plus I believe it remains to be seen if Taylor Townsend will play following her appendix op in Mexico in September.

Sonay is the 3rd lowest ranked player to have reached a WTA 1000 semi-final behind Stephens (No.934 in Toronto 2017) and Azarenka (No.186 in Miami 2018)

The next question is therefore will Siniakova miss out ? She isn't far behind partnering Shuai Zhang, Zhang is already in 8th place with Elise Mertens. Mertens has been playing with Schaider recently but as a pair they are down in 19th place. We can but hope for the right results over the next couple of weeks. It would be a real shame if Siniakova does miss out as she is by far and away the most succesful player this year.

all feels quite messy to me!

I have previously advocated separating out the Tour Finals qualification from top 8 doubles pairings and making it for the top 16 individual doubles points gatherers, and then putting 8 pairs together for the finals based on that. Most of those pairs will still be known and regular pairings, but it means the top 16 qualified players get to play and less of the above "will she , won't she" type stuff.

Sonay's match is on 2nd tomorrow after a doubles match. The doubles match is at 8am and Sonay's is not before 10am, so a more reasonable start time for the UK for once.
