A beautiful lefty swinging wide second serve seals the first set for Ella. Lots of breaks of serve, Ella going long when on the back foot a bit too often and Penickova struggling with her serve under Ellas strong returns

SF:- Ella McDonald (GBR) (GBR) WR423 [Q5] v Tatjana Maria (GER) WR84 [1]
Feels like a second career for Tatjana she's 39 now, although she's been playing regularly for the last five years. Her career high is 36, achieved in July last year.

It will be a good test for Ella. If she can get Tatjana into a third set she should have a chance.
I don't particularly rate either Penicova twin, but it's certainly true that they have a very good weight of shot, a heavy ball
Not exactly tennis but somewhat interesting that the twins live in the US and play for the US but have Czech parents, and are homeschooled (or were a year ago) by their grandmother, in Czech
Bulatova (FQR) is the only person to have taken a set off Ella this week, excited to see how she copes with a jump in opponent quality although at least its a hard court rather than grass!
