Week 36 - WTT W50 - Evora, Portugal - Hard

Cross looked out on her feet. A good win for Johnson.

Just brilliant. Joins Mimi and Harriet beating Kayla Cross since June. Playing Cross seems to be a barometer of  how our players are playing at the moment.

Today's win looks set to lift Sofia to the 370s and above the cluster of Brits from Naiktha down. Sofia can go above Hannah if she wins the tournament

Wow! She's had some great wins over the past two weeks - Dodin, Kayla Day, Gasanova. Feels like she's getting there way quicker than Alicia did.

Interesting one ( I assume you mean Kayla Cross rather than Kayla Day by the way ).

Having a little time on my hands, I have looked at some comparisons, and before Sofia's last 2 weeks in Portugal they looked very similar at the same stages rankingswise ( 17 counters into their effective full time tour careers )

Sofia was WR 459 on 129 ponts at 31/08 from 17 counters from 09/25, having 2 top 300 wins - WR 300 and WR 49 ( Oliynykova ) at Eastbourne ( super win in qualies the week after she'd not made it though the Wimby Q WC play-offs )

As for Alicia, after 17 counters from 05/25 to 01/26 she was about WR 440 on 134 points, having one top 300 counter - WR 184 in a Roehampton W35 )

But yes, now Sofia has gone and added 44 ( net 43 ) points so far in these 2 weeks to jump to live ranked 375 from her best 18 of 19 counters - and has added 4 further top 300 wins ( WRs 162, 191, 215 and 230 ).

Alicia was WR 434 in 02/26 after her best 18 of 19 counters.

Now Alicia is WR 238 on 323 points at 31/08, having markedly progressed since February (.in rankings and bigger wins ). Right now Sofia is making a big step effectively just a bit sooner. Can she keep progressing up, where might she be a few months into next year and longer term? Very encouraging. Hopefully both continue to progress, aiding myself to moan rather less about GB women's tennis

Now 2-1 up with a break in the final set. Doing ok but holding serve for both players is a struggle.  In fact she has just lost her serve so 2-2 final set.

Disappointing in the end. It was a decent effort but her opponent was just better and made fewer errors in the last few games. This looks to be a decent and appropriate level for Sofia at the moment. Whether she can move a lot further up the rankings I'm not sure.

Right now I'd say they are also playing at an appropriate level. They are, of course, a few years younger, and that does make a difference. I think their potential ceiling is higher  but neither have perhaps progressed as far as I would like to have seen but they both have plenty of time on their side.

Looking at the rankings of players aged 16-19  Mika is ranked 22nd and Hannah 30th so pretty respectable.  Drop the age down to 16-17 and things look even better.  Obviously at that age lots of things can chance and not every excellent teenager can make it to the top.

But that's just saying that all three are playing at the right ranking

Which is easy, but unlikely

In that, people said the same about Hannah when she was about 550

To me, like Alicia, Sofia can certainly go higher - it would be crazy if she didn't - she's made such good progress in such a short time, there's no logical reason that today's ranking is the top, no more than that her ranking a month ago was the top

Back in spring, when she was about 550, I said Hannah was playing at 350 level

And hoped she'd get to about 250 by the end of the year

I've been happy that the 350 has come and still think (assuming she has enough events) that 250 is on

Mika though isn't playing at her ranking at the moment - or, at least, she is in tiny patches but certainly not enough for that to be solid

She's more a 350 level too

If W50 SF is Sofia's level then that is equivalent to about 200 on the ranking list.
