As you say, the 10 mins I saw was pretty comfortable

The Japanese boy is agile, and very speedy, with a fast arm, but Mark just commanded the court better, he was always in control

All 4 Brits play singles today: Rhys following Hollie on court 9 (4pm BST) while Mark follows Dani on court 10. Mark has a tough assignment with the top seed (semi-finalist here last year and winner at Roland Garros this year), who is battle hardened having saved a matchpoint in the first round

Theres an article on Taylor Fritz on the BBC today saying tennis players arent robots and looking at the dearth of top 10 players in the latter rounds of the US Open. It made me look at the schedule for our juniors and it does make you wonder if playing singles and doubles on the same day and such a compact slam schedule is one of the reasons why many go on to suffer injuries in the senior game. I did a little delve into the academic research and it seems to show some correlation between repetitive training in young up and coming sports stars and injuries later in on in professional careers, just a thoughtWould explain a lot TBH.

Two sides of the coin

Dani has a far easier match, and won her first set 6-3

Not really in stellar style but obviously doing enough

Hollie has a tough opponent - and lost her first set 2-6

Again, a fair score - Polina is very solid and good at moving the ball around and keeping it deep (the basics of tennis really)

The standard was pretty awful, and the second set was terribly close, but I'll forgive her on the basis that it's often difficult to get going again when you've had a great won, and taen your best title, and after all that high, you've got to immediately start again

Can't use the same excuse in R2 though

Rhys played pretty well too - just slightly too many wild shots when he gets over excited (and/or out of position)

I only saw the last few games, but it looked as if Rhys was rushing and had left his A game in Canada. I noted that Rhys had more than twice the number of breakpoints as his German opponent, who certainly did not look particularly strong for this level.

Dont know if anyone is watching Danni's match but it is close. Lost first set 6-4 then played a good tiebreak in the second. Nice backhand cross court winner and another forehand down the line. Into a third.
