The news at the start of the week is that Nicolas Almagro loses 21 points from a Challenger last year, allowing Greg to advance a place in the rankings, and Andy to get within 18 points of him. Also Florent Serra drops his points from the same event, so Andy also advances a place

Even better for Andy's ranking, Max Mirnyi drops his Nottingham finalist points and Richard Gasquet drops his Nottingam winners points, taking the two of them well off Andy's radar.

Mind? I'm delighted! I haven't had time to do my spreadsheet (too busy sacrificing various animals and making new models) yet but will add my post tomorrow morning once I have.

Go Andy! Hopefully he can help us out by gaining a bucket load of points and rising up the rankings that way. (that would also make defending at Wimbledon less crucial)

That's good.  Initial targets are:

  • Simon & Serra at Halle - who just need to get to R2 to overtake. Neither play tomorrow.
  • Santoro at Halle - who needs to reach R3/QF. Not playing tomorrow either
  • Lopez at Queens - who needs to reach R4/QF. He's first on tomorrow, before Tim & Andre. Sharpen away!

Tim needs a bunch of pin work tomorrow too (check the thread)

On a more positive note, Andy's targets are:

A Quarter Final place, sends Andy up past Almagro, Chela, Malisse, Djokovic and Moya, none of whom are playing this week (don't you love it when the clay- courters don't turn up!

He'll also potentially pass Vliegen, Youzhny and  Greg, depending on their results!

Remember, Quarter- final means getting past Blake in R3!

Are you sure about that? I thought a quarter final is round 3 in an ATP event but i could be wrong.

Queens is a field of 56, as opposed to the usual 32.  So there's an extra round before the usual ATP first round: R1=R56, R2=R32, R3=R16, R4=R8=QF, R5=SF, R6=F. Even worse, there's no more points for Rounds 3- 6 than there are at Halle, which is a field of 32, so the guys at Queens need to win an extra match to get the same  number of points: R16 is 20 points in both tournaments.

Well Lopez lost in 2 sets, showing not only that the pins work but also that Queens were really silly to grant the spaniard a wildcard!

.......and they both lost the second as well. So the pins seem to be sharp this week.

Careful what you say Rob, you'll upset the delicate balance and/or cause offence to whoever-it-is-that-might-take-offence and then the pins won't work anymore

I think that's already happened.  While the Halle live scores were down, our old friend Kristof Vliegen won, and has now overtaken Greg.

And now Greg's out - that's one of Andy's competitors we didn't want to lose. Andy on for British number 1 if he get to the Quarters.
