Folks may remember that there used to be a National Champs held at Telford for quite a few years back around the 1990's, players like Henman and Rusedski would play but in later life it fell away in terms of quality as British tennis went through the doldrums and the level of player fell away, and TV deserted it.
It feels to me like the mens game, at least, is on a resurgence and it made me think how much more competitive and interesting a national championships would be nowadays.
I realise it won't ever really come back, as commercially it wouldn't stand up and players are more interested in world rankings.
But as a fantasy it might - and I wondered if there was an appetite if I ran a fantasy event for British players based on some sort of voting process?
I had in mind maybe the top 16 players (or we could even make it top 32?) at a certain point for men and women - probably in November when the actual main seasons are finished and there is less actual tennis to occupy is - ie less competition!!
Idea would be to have a draw of some sort, then a series of matches via polls lasting no more than one day with the winner of the poll going through (will work out how to deal with any ties). And go through the draw like that - it would probably take 4 days end to end with a 16 player draw.
I have a feeling I did something like a fantasy Wimbledon a few years back but this would be just GB players.
Any appetite for it? If folks think it may be a little bit of fun when the main season has drawn to a close?
