Week 34 - US Open, New York, USA - Hard - Qualifying

Tennisforum reporting Alicia had already withdrawn from the alternates list

What a shame.

That's so sad after all she had done to get to such a position

I really hope that it's not too serious and she can be back playing pretty soon but that was such a biggie.

She also withdrew (on 14/08) from the only two WTT tournaments she was entered for, both on w/c 31 August

The wiki page for the US Open Women's Qualifying is reporting that Fran is the 3rd seed and Harriet the 29th. No sign of a drawsheet, yet though.

Tennis forum has Harriet as seeded 32 but Kenin has the last WC so 31. Either way, she has just slipped into a seeded spot which is good news.

It's not released until the evening before play starts smile

Just to note the approach of different federations, the US federation this year is doing a new event for a Quali Wildcard

They've selected 4 women/girls and 4 men/boys to play today, in a one day event, with the winner of each getting a wildcard for adult qualis, starting tomorrow

"The US Open Qualifying Wild Card Challenge is a new competition featuring rising American men and women competing for a wild card in the US Open Qualifying Tournament.

What is the format for the US Open Qualifying Wild Card Challenge?

The Challenge will feature four men and four women competing in six total matchesmens and womens semifinals and finalswith the winners receiving a wild card into the US Open qualifying event, which takes place Monday, Aug. 24 to Thursday, Aug. 27."

The girls selected are two 16 year-olds and two 17 year-olds

Section 3

Section 6
QR1:- Claire Liu (USA) WR114 [6] v Heather Watson (GBR) WR443 [SR]

QR1:- Jordyn Hazelitt (USA) WR1296/16yo/JR23=CH v Harriet Dart (GBR) WR143 [29]

Pity that Heather and Harriet are drawn in the same section.

Good set of draws. Heather is so hard to predict at the moment, she could absolutely beat Liu but equally could lost 10 games in a row from a break up the first.

 Yes

We've got two wildcards (Hazelitt and Scott)

Three players ranked outside the top-200 (Hazelitt, Scott and Zuleta de Reales)

Several players who are basically clay courters (Brancaccio, Zuleta de Reales...)

You couldn't ask for much better QR1 draws

And, remember, it's:

QR1 loss: $32,000

QR2 loss: $48,000

FQR loss: $66,000

Heather is on Court 5 on Monday. It looks as if the others don't play until Tuesday.

Pretty shameful of the USTA to make Liu (who made R2 at RG and R3 at Wimbledon) go through qualifying instead of Venus.
