Weeks 26-27 - The Championships, Wimbledon - Singles - grass

There's actually some value in the odds today. The last time I put a bet on, it was KB against Gauff at similar odds and KB won so I might take a punt.

Katie *1-5 down but has had break points in two long return games. Just not been able to get the break.

She's troubling Keys at times and has had chances but Katie is only at 50% first serve percentage, she has to get that higher in the second set

TBH Indont think she is really troubling Maddy in that first set. A few wrinkles but no real pressure. She needs to hold this first game or it could really start to unravel.and she does!

She's created break points in 3 of the Keys service games and just had one in the first game of the second. Katie needs to get some easier holds though

6-1 6-4 but Katie really gave it her all and gave a great account of herself. So happy to see her back in the 2nd round here. Hopefully she can stay injury free.

Think she played a bit passive on the deuce points in the final game hoping down the middle would make Maddy miss. But a really strong showing overall.

I think given that was Katies first swing on Number one court, she seemed to relish the experience in the second set which was much more competitive. Got to say I do like Maddy. Surely Katie should be near the top 100 if she can stay healthy for the rest of the year.

Encouraging performance from Katie, return game was very strong and the first set was closer than the scoreline suggests. Something I can't shake having watched her more lately is her serve doesn't have the snap and speed it used to when she was younger which is possibly her compensating for her back trouble?

very positive performance from Swan, there wasn't a gulf between them. Playing against better players week in week out would sharpen up Swan's game. Well done Katie, fought well and sparkled today.

Katie competed well today, but I felt that Keys was a bit below par.
Katie's serve percentage seemed low, and it's hard to judge the accuracy from high in the stands at the side.

This match demonstrated her potential. I heard a commentator the other day saying he'd asked her about her injury and its impact on her power. She said she started playing to 80% power to protect her back Recently she said she'd seen Nadal saying he got used to playing with pain when he knew it wouldn't have a lasting impact. Now she is learning that she can start playing with some pain now, in the knowledge that it won't always have a direct impact on her back. But she's got to force herself out of the habit of playing too safe. During this match I think we saw her take the handbrake off quite a bit and she started to play with more power. She looks like she can kick on from here.

She modified her service some time ago to protect her back

Really good effort from Katie today. No disgrace at all in losing to Keys and the match was closer than the scoreline suggested. A lot to build on.
