Weeks 26-27 - The Championships, Wimbledon - Singles - grass

I dont think you can spin this to be any better than it is! Just lets wait two or three years before we panic. I am sure the transitioning juniors will come through into the top 100 and higher and there are a few on the periphery who will also get back into the top 200. Men have strength in depth but the women brought in the last GS singles title for the Brits. Personally I would rather have two in the top 30 than loads anchored in the 100 to 200 slot.

It is very unlikley that all three of the youngsters (Mimi, Hannah and Mika) will all become top-50 players.

Not impossible, and hopefully yes, but there are too many bumps in the road.

Would be wonderful if all 3 are able to reach top 100 qualifying for slams on rankings with one of them becoming top 30 and seeded. I would count that as successful

Good, I was hoping that would be on Court One.

You never know. Give them a bit of time and space. Who knows what could happen.

So pleased for Katie. Think that moves her near the top 150

As PeteM said, currently showing as live ranked 170 with her R1 win points.

Just now go and beat Madison Keys or Kayla Day to get into WR 150 territory. That match has just gone one set all.

Presumably good enough for US Open Qualifying?

Swanny probably our most injury afflicted player so ironic to see her save British Tennis from total humilation.

Id certainly hope so, Katie has points to defend soon but is down to play in Portugal next week and likely will play in the US either in 125s or high ITFs before US Open qualifying. Top 200 pretty much assures her a quali spot

Katie will now already be comfortably into US Open Qualifying.

She is WR 196 at 29/06 on 379 points.

She has so far added 70 ( net 68 ) points  here for the 13/07 rankings.

She is due to drop 35 + 29 = 64 ( net 62 ) points on 20/07.

So net net she will be at worst on 6 more points than her current 379 points for the 27/07 rankings - these should be the rankings used for the US Open qualifying list - so probably still just inside the top 200.

 That's not the point, though

Of course, we can dream, and of course it's possible, and wouldn't it be lovely biggrin

But what I mean is a federation can't think everything will be alright because they'll soon have three players in the top-50, not when those three players are young and well outside the top-200, however promising they might be

Ok take your point. Insufficient depth to the talent at present. Therein perhaps lies the crux of the matter. Do we have the talent coming through? Are young sportsmen and women finding more attractive professional sports that appeal more than the drudgery of pro tennis? Nonetheless if they are good enough players can break through with great speed. However some will always never make the top 100. I think culturally tennis is still seen as a rich persons sport, especially in the North of the country. We must be overlooking a wealth of tennis talent north of Watford? Maybe we need, dare I say it, more devolution! More Manchesterism. Get to the grass roots. I do think the powers that be prefer to keep London centric.

Francesca Jones (GBR) WR103 lost to Diane Parry (FRA) WR47 4-6 4-6

I dont really go for the chain reactions, but maybe worth noting that Hannah's opponent,  Babs K, has just beaten the French Open champion, Mirra A

I watched the end of that match. Full of drama. Barbora took it on her 7th match point. Mirra was not happy with the outcome.smile
