Today has been good - with very close losses for Toby, Cam and Harriet, this wasnt a total disaster. The headlines will be what they are, but its not all doom and gloom. Fery, Samuel and Choinski could all be US DA.

Shelton, Cerundolo (F)  and maybe J) and Tiafoe my ones to watch this year...can one of them usurp Sinner and win it?

Tiafoe's match against Atmane is still in progress.  He leads by 7-6(6) 6-1 4-6.

But has now been suspended, presumably because of the light (or lack of it).

Excellent match, Jan

Just shows that all this idea of playing grass court warm-ups is a load of nonsense

I don't feel I 'know' Jan very well, but I've seen him play live a couple of times, and he always seems polite, professional and someone you want to support

Great serving

And showing also that players reach their prime later

The stats put it at 27, and people tend not to believe it

But he's 30 and now hitting his peak ranking

Gawd getting so old  wink   He better make sure that he is a direct entry again next year then.

- unless of course the WC committee come to their collective common senses in the meantime ( maybe pass them a few stats ).

Much better day today and a real buzz around the grounds when the Brit boys started pulling out the stops.

Obviously a dreadful look for Arthur to be caught with his pants down on that viral serve let video.

I have had all manner of non tennis supporting friends forward it me asking if I know the cheating Brit.

Agree the video in isolation isnt fantastic as he clearly does stop, but equally you see far worse week in week out. Two wrongs do not make a right but still.

Dzumhur has been complaining about a lett that wasn't called for ages. Don't actually think he's won a game since it happened. Still chuntering away but Fery just stuck his earphones in.

ETA it was a service lett. He was trying to get Fery involved, got a code violation and is still complaining

The Beeb expands on the issue!

And another one: You went to Wimbledon today right? Did you see the cheating scandal?

I think the assessment of what is wrong in British tennis is judging too much on one event. Yes, mens wise, we have a strong group in the 100/200 range but it is clear that Arthur, Jan, Jake (when he gets it back - class is permanent), and probably Toby, Jack PJ and Ollie T could all get to and survive around the top 100. Jacks fitness is another issue and Billy is another question, but we could certainly have 5 or 6 top 100 players in 6 months time.

Maybe not slam tournament winners, but stronger that we are now. Jack D is probably the only slam winning player we have. Whether that will ever happen.

Womens side - I do worry about, v much, and so much seems to rest on Hannah, Mika and Mimi. I think all could get near the top 100 but dont see anyone being a top 100 long term player Im afraid there, and a lot seems to reside on Emma as our one big hope at the top.

But I think overall we are better than the press are deducing from this event.

Round 2 - I think we well get at least one more win, hope it is more! Jake and Arthur both have a chance and lets see who Jan ends up playing

As you mention the women, Mika will be a top 100 player long term, so should Hannah be. I think.

Yes, so little coming through on that side beyond the 3 youngsters always mentioned.

The women are where the men were 3 or 4 years ago. A lot of the men coming through, Jake, JPJ, Toby, Ollie, JoMo, Arthur have come through US college. All of current crop of top 18-22 year old women, except Mimi and Ranah, is in or just about to go to US College. That said, unlike Jake, JPJ, Toby, Ollie and JoMo, none of our women in US College are yet No 1s for powerhouse programs that everyone is talking about in the US College scene. Savannah has been the No 1 for her program in the last 2 years, but only for a mid-major program and its difficult to assess where her potential is based on that.

The worry for the men is where is the next cohort behind the recent US College graduates? Few are going the US College route or setting juniors alight.

Yes, I do remember 3 or 4 yesrs ago being really concerned aboit the depth on the men's side and so much has changed on that front, as you say very much US College led.

The dream of ever getting 20 in the top 500. Now GB #20 is WR 313, we have 28 in the top 500, 26 in the top 400, and 18 in the top 300 ( we actually had 20 in the top 300 just last week ).

But women's US college tennis is a far less important pipeline

Currently, according to figures I read online, there are 5 US college players in the women's top100

But 16 US college players in the men's

Dan has unleashed! From the Telegraph:

Dan Evans accused the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) of a total p---take and of presiding over nothing short of a shambles in a scathing parting shot after his final professional match.

In his most ferocious attack yet on the decision to snub him for a singles wild card on his Wimbledon swansong, Evans claimed he had been given no reason for being overlooked and that no-one from the LTA had congratulated him personally on his career.

The 36-year-old lashed out following a tearful first-round exit in the mens doubles alongside Henry Searle, as the British pair were beaten 6-2, 6-4 by ninth seeds Hugo Nys and Édouard Roger-Vasselin.

Evans, who was also denied wild cards for the HSBC Championships at Queens and the Ilkley Open, said: Nobodys had the minerals, or however you want to phrase it, to come over from the governing body who I think I have done plenty for and given me an explanation.

Its pride, isnt it? I dont know. Is that the word? And if youre not going to do that, and its certainly not Jamie Bakers job to come and give me the reason why he didnt give me a wild card. Its not the tournament director to do that.

I just think somebody could have come and sat down and spoken. Like, jeez, I paid enough. Like, thats their job. And thats all.

Im not angry but, jeez, tell the truth or, like, you cant give me a wild card into Ilkley? The reasoning was they were all given out. I have been playing tennis for 16 years on the tour, and I have always known that the wild cards arent given out on a Monday.

Dont give me some nonsense answer about theyre all gone [in] Ilkley. Come on, guys. Thats a total p---take for me. Excuse my French.

etc etc

Asked how he expected to feel on his first morning after retirement, Evans replied: I can tell you what Ill feel: hungover.

Never change, Dan!
